In the case of large format UV printers that use industrial print heads such as Konica Minolta or Ricoh,
the print head is cleaned by injecting air and sending ink down inside the print head.

However, in the case of UV printers that use Epson series print heads, the captop is raised at the bottom of the print head to seal it, and in the sealed state, the peristaltic pump rotates to extract ink and clean the print head.

The problem is that when ink is not extracted through the print head via the peristaltic pump, there is no way to clean the print head.

Ink supply problem First, I will explain the captop.

II. Captop bottom tube _UV Printer Ink Supply Problem Captop Bottom Tube

 

1. “Aren’t there two types of ink tubes: hard and flexible?” _UV Printer Ink Supply Problem Captop Bottom Tube

There are usually two types of ink tubes used in UV printers.

One is a hard tube made of a hard material,
which is connected from the main ink tank, passes through the cable carrier, and is connected to the bottom of the head carriage board.
The reason for using a hard material is that friction occurs when the X-axis moves back and forth during printing, and the tube may wear out due to friction, so it seems to be made of a strong hard material.
Because the material is hard, you have to apply a lot of force to insert or remove the tube from the fitting.
In particular, when connecting a hard tube to a damper, there is no clearance, so the connection part is not sealed, and air is sucked in, causing ink supply problems.
For this reason, a hard tube is not used for connecting a damper.

The other is a soft ink tube,
and the last ink tube connected to the damper must be soft.
When installing the damper, there should be no air leakage, and it should not be pulled out even if pulled out, so the damper connection must be a soft ink tube.

This is a story from when I first sold the UV Printer in 2020.
Naturally, I thought there were two types of ink tubes, soft and hard, and I purchased them as AS parts.
When replacing the consumable Captop, the tube that goes into the bottom was replaced with a soft ink tube, and the inkload (pumping) that had been working well stopped.

After tightening the connection part with a cable tie, it worked sometimes and sometimes didn’t, and the inkload (pumping) problem was solved by a friend who was in charge of AS.

After a while, I repaired and sold 8 used equipment myself, and I replaced all the consumables.
When I replaced the consumables of 5 out of 8, I found that the diameter of the Captop lower tube was smaller than that of the soft ink tube.

Only then did I remember what the Chinese manufacturer had said.

 

“Why don’t you buy the Captop bottom tube?”

III. Even if there is only a small leak _UV Printer Ink Supply Problem Captop Bottom Tube

“Team leader, if you pour alcohol on the captop and inkload (pumping), the alcohol comes out, but then the ink doesn’t come out.”

 

In this case, there are usually three factors.

  • if the tube connected to the damper is loose and air comes in,
  • when the captop and print head positions are slightly different,
  • if the bottom tube of the captop becomes loose and air comes in,

There are countless reasons why Inkdoes(Pumping) didn’t work.
If it does not work after using it well for several months, the problem is most likely due to the lower tube of the Captop becoming loose rather than a change in the position of the Captop and print head or a leak in the damper itself.

 

How to check is

  • open the captop and try to pull out the bottom tube with your hand. If it comes off, there is a leak. If the tube stretches and sticks, it is normal.
  • The best way is to always replace a tube that is easily separated like this with a new one, but if there is no captop bottom tube, it is okay to just cut off the end connection and reconnect it.
  • Don’t assume it’s normal just because you pull it out gently and it doesn’t come out.
  • Make sure to check whether the tube holds up even if it’s slightly stretched.

I’m telling you this because I, too, have solved the inkload (pumping) problem after replacing the bottom tube of Captop again.

3. Various causes of inkload (pumping) problem _UV Printer Ink Supply Problem Captop Bottom Tube

There are countless variables in this part from waste ink to the main bottle.

  • In an actual customer site, the ink line connected to the waste ink tank was blocked and pumping did not work.
  • If the peristaltic pump tube (yellow tube) is shrunk (this is a common problem. The yellow tube is a consumable item), or a part is torn, it may not work properly.
  • The bottom tube of the captop was torn, and the connection of the bottom tube of the captop was loose (what I explained today).
  • Captop itself is defective (it happened once)
  • The protective border at the bottom of the print head is broken and the captop rubber and the print head are not sealed.

  • Because the positions of the head and captop do not match
  • Because the damper connection is defective (be sure to check the ink tube and damper inlet diameters).
  • Air leakage due to chewing of the ink line
  • Ink is not supplied because it hardens inside the ink line

I told you that you should use a smaller diameter tube instead of the regular soft tube for the Captop bottom tube.
