Now, I’m organizing the problems and symptoms related to the UV Printer head.

Before dealing with the actual problems and solutions, there are too many misconceptions about the head, so I’ll explain the basics first.

Today I will explain grayscale and multi-drop.

I. Image quality comparison _Print head multi drop Gray scale

It was time that I sell UV printers to overseas market.
While the best quality was the Spectra 25 pl print head, our UV printer achieved the good image quality using KM 512 14 pl print head and sold a lot of equipment in a short period of time.
However, two years later, when OCE launched a new model, sales plummeted.
Our equipment is 14pl CMYK Lc Lm 6 colors, OCE is CMYK 4 colors but has the 7 pl small volume drop.
OCE was superior in terms of image quality, with not only small pico liters but also grayscale (variable dot precious) technology.

Based on the picture above, I will explain the image quality for each pico liter.

1. 14 pl 4 colors _Print head multi drop Gray scale

When expressing human skin tone, if only 4 colors are used in 14pl, the dark skin tone cannot be expressed with only magenta.

For this reason, black dots appear here and there in the areas where magenta falls.

The problem is that when 14pl black dots fall on light skin tones, the black dots that appear here and there are visible to the human eye, making the skin tone look rough.

In 2005, there was no print head that jetted small pico liters, so it was recognized as a limitation of UV printers.

For this reason, UV printers were not used for POP advertisements that are viewed from a close distance,

but POP was created by printing on general adhesive sheets with water and attaching them to form x or form board.

2. 14 pl CMYK Lc Lm _Print head multi drop Gray scale

If you use Light Magenta and Light Cyan, which are secondary colors of Magenta and Cyan,

You can use Lc Lm instead of block dot in the light part, so there are relatively less black dots.

If you use CMYK Lc Lm, light skin tones are expressed much more smoothly than when only CMYK 4 colors are used.

Because of this, many manufacturers have started to produce 6-color equipment instead of 4-color equipment.

3. 7 pl 4 color gray scale _Print head multi drop Gray scale

Although it is CMYK 4 colors, the image is expressed smoothly by adjusting the dot size on the far right in the picture above.

When viewed from a distance, the large dot appears as magenta, and the smallest dot appears light like light magenta.

And since there are also medium-sized dots, the color between magenta and Lm is also expressed.

Since Gray Scale technology can jet large pico and small pico dots with one color, the color range that can be expressed with one ink expands.

Even if you don’t use a lot of black dots for light skin tones, the skin tone is expressed,

so the image looks pretty, as in the picture below.

II. Process of creating multi drop in print head _Print head multi drop Gray scale

1. When a signal is given, one ink drop is ejected _Print head multi drop Gray scale

If you look at the picture below,

  • Voltage is applied to give physical force to the upper plate containing ink.
  • The upper plate bends once and pushes the ink, and the ink is jetted with that force.
  • As shown in the first picture, if you push once, only one ink is jetted,
  • and if you push once the second and third times, one drop of ink is jetted out each time.
  • In this way, the print head only jets the same volume of ink drops.

So, how do large drops fall?

  • The gap between the print head and the material is usually 1.2 mm or 1.5 mm. In inkjet, this gap is called stand off.
  • Multi drop or Gray scale is not jetting different volumes of 7 pl, 14 pl, or 21 pl from the nozzle hole,
  • but the same volume of ink is jetted, and in a short section of 1.2 or 1.5 mm, the ink is combined to create a large dot.
  • The technology of combining ink in such a short section and jetting different volumes of ink onto the material is called Multi drop or Gray scale.

2. How does ink come together in that small space? _Print head multi drop Gray scale

Above, we talked about how ink is jetted when voltage is applied once.

When applying voltage, you can control several conditions.

  • Voltage Power
  • Will the voltage be applied gradually or suddenly?
  • Voltage application time
  • The time to wait for the next voltage after the first voltage.

If you look at the picture below,

  • The voltage is applied for the same amount of time for the first and second,
  • but the voltage application time is doubled for the third.
  • When you do this, the first and second drops combine with the third drop to create a large volume of ink droplet within a stand-off distance of 1.2mm.

Waveform tuning.

Controlling the jetting condition through the head and finding the optimal value is called waveform tuning.
The head manufacturer and ink manufacturer work together to create a waveform and provide this waveform value to the printer manufacturer,
or the ink manufacturer purchases a dropwatcher, a device that can tune the waveform, and tunes the waveform without the help of the head manufacturer and provides it with the ink.

 

3. In reality _Print head multi drop Gray scale

Every time the head changes, every time the ink changes, you have to create the waveform.

In the beginning, the waveform provided by the head manufacturer was used as the default,

but as the printer manufacturer grew, they started to manufacture the dropwatcher equipment themselves and make the waveforms directly with the ink manufacturer.

Following the Japanese, American, and European printer manufacturers, Korea also started making waveforms through dropwatcher,

and now, it is the basic concept for Chinese UV printer manufacturers or specialized companies that develop boards and SW.

In addition, ink manufacturers also purchase dropwatchers and tune the waveforms to make ink.
