We are documenting printhead fundamentals in order. This list is updated with each new part.

Many printer users — and even service engineers — hold misconceptions about print heads, so we would like to explain the fundamentals of printhead knowledge.
Today, we cover print head lifespan and warranty.

I. Print Head Lifespan — Printhead life span and warranty

1. Lifespan as Listed in the Manual

  • Until around 2010, print head manuals included a stated lifespan — but that information no longer appears today.
  • We believe it was removed due to the potential for disputes or because the figures were not precise enough to publish.
  • Using those older manuals as a reference, let’s take a look at how long a print head was supposed to last.

1_1. Spectra Q Class Print Head

  • The following is from the Spectra (now Fujifilm Dimatix) print head manual.

  • The Dimatix print head uses a ceramic material at the base instead of a film.
  • We used this head to build UV printers at a previous company, and some customers ran it for over 10 years without a head replacement — a testament to the durability of the ceramic construction.
  • The manual lists the rated lifespan as 150 liters of jetting, or 100 billion jets per nozzle (100,000,000,000).
  • That is the threshold at which the head is considered to have reached the end of its service life.
  • We will use this jetting count to calculate how many days of actual use that translates to.

1_2. Konica KM1024MHE Print Head

  • The following is from the Konica Minolta print head manual.

  • Unlike the Dimatix, the Konica head uses a film at the base rather than ceramic.
  • This makes it less durable than a ceramic construction.
  • The manual does not list a liter-based lifespan — only a total jetting count, which is listed as 4,000,000,000 jets.
  • We will similarly calculate how many days of use this translates to.

2. How Many Jets Does a Print Head Fire Per Second During Printing?

  • The Spectra Q class reaches end-of-life at 100,000,000,000 jets,
  • and the Konica KM1024MHE at 4,000,000,000 jets.
  • To estimate how many days each head can last, we first need to know how many times the head jets per second during actual printing.

2_1. Assumptions for Calculating Jets Per Second During Printing

  • Head spec frequency (Hz): Print heads are typically rated with a maximum Hz value. Hertz (Hz) means one cycle per second — so a head rated at 14,000 Hz can jet ink up to 14,000 times per second at maximum.
  • Single drop basis: We assume 1 pulse = 1 drop (not gray scale / multi drop). Since older print heads did not have multi drop capability, this is a reasonable baseline assumption.
  • Duty ratio (4-pass): In 4-pass printing, the jetting data is divided across 4 passes, meaning only 25% of the nozzles are active at any given time. We assume a 25% head utilization rate.
  • Y-axis feed time reduction: When the Y-axis advances by one pass interval (known as feeding), the print head is idle. We estimate that feeding accounts for approximately 40% of total operation time, during which the head is not jetting.
  • Real images are not 100% CMYK: ICC profiles typically reduce total ink density to around 80% (Ink Total Limit is commonly set at 320% rather than 400%), and actual images are not printed in solid black (CMYK 100%). We estimate the effective head utilization per image at approximately 55%.

2_2. Calculated Jets Per Second After Applying All Assumptions

  • Applying all variables, the estimated jets per second during actual printing are as follows:

  • The Spectra Q class has a maximum frequency of 14,000 Hz, but during actual printing averages 1,155 Hz — meaning 1,155 jets per second.
  • The Konica KM1024MHE has a maximum frequency of 12,000 Hz, but during actual printing averages 990 Hz — meaning 990 jets per second.

3. Converting Jets Per Second into Days of Use

3_1. Calculating Total Usable Days

  • The table above uses the estimated jets per second during printing
  • to calculate the total jets fired over an 8-hour workday,
  • then divides the rated total lifespan jetting count by that daily figure
  • to arrive at the total number of usable days.
  • Based on this calculation, the estimated usable days are as follows:
  • Spectra Q class: 100,000,000,000 ÷ 33,264,000 jets/day = 3,006 days
  • Konica KM1024MHE: 4,000,000,000 ÷ 28,512,000 jets/day = 140 days

3_2. Theory Is Just Theory

  • At my previous company, we used Konica heads in UV printers we developed and manufactured over more than 15 years.
  • According to the manual, Konica heads should have been replaced every 140 days — roughly every 6 months.
  • But in practice, heads never suddenly stopped working after hitting their rated lifespan, and we never replaced them on a 6-month schedule.

The data above represents theoretical lifespan only. Actual usable life is determined far more by other factors.

  • Whether the user is maintaining the head properly
  • Whether the ink inside the head is tuned to match the head’s characteristics
  • Whether the board voltage is being applied appropriately, and whether the waveform has been built according to the manual

II. Head Warranty — Printhead life span and warranty

1. Real-World Warranty Cases from Head Manufacturers

  • “Can a printer manufacturer actually get warranty coverage from a head manufacturer?”
  • In practice, almost never.
  • Over 15 years, we purchased thousands of Konica heads — and received warranty replacements on just 2 of them.
  • To describe one of those cases: the head failed immediately upon powering on after connecting the cable. Even so, Konica required 3 months of testing before they agreed to provide a single replacement unit free of charge.

2. The Printer Manufacturer’s Position on Head Warranty

  • In the early days of UV printing — before 2010 — the one-year equipment warranty typically included the print head.
  • That coverage came with an exception for user fault, and because “user fault” was a vague concept, manufacturers sometimes honored warranty claims from customers who pushed back hard enough — and sometimes concluded it was user fault for those who did not.
  • Today, however, “the print head is a consumable and is excluded from warranty” has become the standard policy — regardless of whether user fault was involved.
  • The reasons are clear: print heads are expensive, printer manufacturers themselves cannot get warranty coverage from head manufacturers, and the thin margins on printer sales make head warranty coverage financially impossible.
  • With nearly all Korean printer manufacturers gone by 2026, the strict “no head warranty” policy maintained by Chinese and Japanese manufacturers has firmly taken hold in the market.
  • In short, there is no free warranty period for print heads, and free replacement is simply not a realistic expectation today.

III. ARTJET UV Printer
