I. Head life _Printhead life span and warranty
Until 2010, the print head manual had the head lifespan listed, but it is no longer there.
I assume it was deleted because it was controversial or inaccurate information.
Let’s calculate how long it can be used based on the old manual’s head lifespan.
1. Head life as indicated in the manual _Printhead life span and warranty
Spectra Q class print head

The Dimatix print head is made of ceramic material instead of film on the bottom.
The ceramic material is durable enough that some customers have used it for over 10 years without replacing the head.
The head manual above states 150 liters of jetting, or 100 billion jets (100,000,000,000) per nozzle.
Konica KM1024MHE print head

The bottom of the Konica head is made of film. It is less durable than ceramic material.
The manual states that the total number of jets is 4,000,000,000.
2. The number of jets the print head fired per second when printing _Printhead life span and warranty
Spectra Q class ends its head life after 100,000,000,000 jets,
Konica KM1024MHE ends its head life after 4,000,000,000 jets.
Then. When printing on a printer, if you calculate the number of times it jets per second, you can estimate how many days it can be used based on that number.
First, when printing, let’s find out how many times per second it jets.
- Head spec frequency (Hz): “Hertz (Hz) means one vibration or one cycle per second.” If it’s 14,000Hz, it can jet ink up to 14,000 times per second.
- Single Drop standard: Based on 1 pulse, not gray scale (multi drop). In other words, ink jetting at a 1:1 ratio with frequency.
- Duty ratio (4pass): 4 passes means that the data to be jetted is divided into 4 times and jetted, so instead of using 100% of the entire head nozzle, only 25% is used to create the image.
- Reduction in jetting time due to Y-axis feeding: When the Y-axis moves by the pass interval (using the term feeding), no jetting is done, and the feeding action takes up about 40% of the time when expressing an image.
- The actual image is not CMYK 100%: In the ICC profile, the overall density is reduced to 80% (Ink Total limit is set from 400% to 320% on average), and since the actual image printing does not print only black (CMYK 100%), I set it to about 55%.

According to rough calculations,
Spectra Q class maximum frequency is 100,000,000,000 times, but when printing, the average jetting is 1,155 times.
Konica KM1024MHE maximum frequency is 4,000,000,000 times, but when printing, the average jetting is 990 times.
3. Number of days of use based on 8 hours per day_Printhead life span and warranty

There is also a number that the head can jet at most, and a number that indicates whether it jets when printing for 8 hours a day.
If you divide the number of jets in the head life by the number of jets when using for 8 hours, you can find out the number of days it can be used.
Spectra Q class head life 100,000,000,000 ÷ 33,264,000 jets per day = 3006 days
Konica KM1024MHE head life 4,000,000,000 ÷ 28,512,000 jets per day = 140 days
4. Factors more important than head life _Printhead life span and warranty
Konica head life is 140 days, theoretically the head should be replaced every 6 months,
but there has never been a case where the head suddenly stopped working after being used normally and its lifespan ended,
and there has never been a case where it was replaced every 6 months.
The theoretical head lifespan is only, and the actual usable lifespan is determined by the following factors.
- Is the consumer managing the head well?
- Is the ink inside the head well-tuned to match the head characteristics?
- Is the head voltage and waveform by the board stable?
II. Head Warranty _Printhead life span and warranty
1. Printer manufacturer _Printhead life span and warranty
“Can a printer manufacturer get a warranty on a head from the head manufacturer?”
It’s almost impossible.
We’ve purchased thousands of heads over the past 15 years, and only two have been warranted.
One of the warranted heads broke right after we connected the cable and turned it on, but I was able to get a free head after 3 months.
2. For general consumers _Printhead life span and warranty
Until 2010, the 1-year warranty for equipment included the head. However, under the premise that consumer negligence was excluded,
because of the vague concept of consumer negligence, warranty was provided to customers who strongly complained of injustice,
and for those who did not, it was concluded that it was consumer negligence.
However, now, regardless of consumer negligence, “heads are consumables and are excluded from warranty.”
- The fact that print heads are expensive
- The fact that printer manufacturers do not receive print head warranties from head manufacturers
- The fact that printers have low sales margins makes head warranties impossible
Now that Korean printer manufacturers have almost disappeared by 2025, the policy of Chinese and Japanese manufacturers who strongly maintain the “head compensation exclusion” policy seems to have settled in the market.
