Printing but nothing comes out

 

I’m summarizing UV printer problems and solutions.

The link below is a compilation of all the problems and causes and solutions that occurred over the past 5 years, totaling 24 episodes. If you have a printer that uses the damper method, you can solve most problems by just clicking the link below.

Ink supply issue and solution summary

 

Now, I’m organizing the problems and symptoms related to UV Printer heads.

Before dealing with the actual problems and solutions, there are many misconceptions about heads, so I’ll explain the basic knowledge first.

If you understand only the sessions explained here, you will be able to see that you know more about inkjet heads than inkjet manufacturer salespeople or equipment distributor engineers.

Head Basics Summary

 

Last time, I explained why the following problem occurred.

9. “Even though I replaced the head, the same specific color doesn’t come out at all.”

 

Today, I’m going to talk about a problem where the printer prints, but no ink comes out.

 

I. When there is no problem with board & head communication _Printing but nothing comes out

1. Problem Symptoms _Printing but nothing comes out

This Tuesday, when I arrived at the office after installing the equipment, the manager in charge called me.

“Team Leader, after you left, I tried to print, but nothing came out.”

“Would you please try printing the file I tested again, not the newly ripped file?”

“The ARTJET TEST image doesn’t come out either.”

“Does the Nozzle test come out?”

“Wait a minute. Nothing comes out.”

The nozzzle TEST pattern should come out like this, but it doesn’t.

“Did you do anything else after I left?”

“I just moved my seat for a bit, turned off my PC, turned off my equipment, and reconnected it”

2. Solve _Printing but nothing comes out

“Turn off the software, press the power button, and the main power switch. Let’s do it together.”

“Shall I turn it on now?”

“Yes, turn on the main power switch, press the power button on the front. And I’ll wait for 10 seconds before connecting the software.”

“Initializing is finished.”

“Press the Test button.”

“Oh, the ink is coming out now.”

“Just in case, please print the ARTJET TEST image. Please don’t hang up.”

“I’m holding the phone with my shoulder while working, so if it doesn’t work, I’ll call you back. I’ll hang up^^”

3. Print head power supply and communication check  _Printing but nothing comes out

“Manager, when you press the power button, power is supplied to the head board, and when you look at it from the front, two red lights in the middle of the board come on and go off.”

“Where is it?”

“It should be gone now, that’s the stage where the print head is powered and communicating.”

“Oh, I think I know what you mean.”

“Before the red light goes off, if you connect the software, the print head is not powered or communicating, so the nozzle cannot work.”

After clicking the power button, check that the two lights in the video below go off at the same time, and after about 7 seconds, connect the software.

It’s printing but nothing comes out

II. When there is a problem with board & head communication _Printing but nothing comes out

Equipment initialization is normal
Other motion movements are also normal
However, the nozzle pattern does not appear even when the Test button is pressed.
Even if printing is performed in this state, the head carriage moves and the printing operation occurs, but the ink is not jetted.

 

This problem occurs when the head board and print head do not communicate normally.

When a communication error occurs like this, the symptoms are as follows.

• It’s printing but nothing comes out As in the link here, the two lights do not turn off at the same time, but one turns off after the other.
• And one light keeps blinking at intervals. For related videos, click here to see the video at the bottom.

 

The cause of the problem is complex.

• If the flat cable connection of any of the Color, White, and Varnish headsets is not good, this problem occurs.
• If only one of the Color, White, and Varnish headsets is broken, the board cannot communicate, so this problem occurs.
• This problem occurs when the board itself is broken.

 

III. Problem Checking Procedure _Printing but nothing comes out

Again, after turning on the Main switch, turning on the Power button, and waiting for about 10 seconds when connecting the GUI, nothing is jetted, and the lights in the middle of the board do not turn off simultaneously, but turn off at intervals, and one side continues to blink after turning off.

Because the board and head are powered, always turn off the printer’s main power switch before starting work.

Since the board itself is normal, the problem is caused by one of the three color, white, and varnish heads or one of the data cables connected to each head.

Each head needs to be inspected, and I will explain using the color head as an example first.

Connect only one color head and inspect it

• Turn off the entire printer ( GUI off => Power button off => Power main switch off => Wait for 30 seconds)
• Disconnect the data cable connected to the small board and connect it so that the gold of the data cable matches the gold of the small board exactly.
• In this state, connect the color head small board to the head board.
• The white and varnish heads are still not connected.
• Turn on the printer. (Main switch on, Power button next to the touch panel on)

When power is applied to the board, if the red light in the middle turns on at the same time, turns off at the same time after a while, and there is no blinking light after turning off,

The color head is communicating normally with the board, and it is not a color head problem.

 

Connecting the White Head

• Keep the Color head connected,
• and turn off the entire printer (GUI off => Power button off => Power main switch off => Wait for 30 seconds)
• Disconnect the Data cable connected to the small board, and plug it in so that the gold of the Data cable matches the gold of the small board exactly.
• In this state, connect the White head small board to the head board.
• The Color and White heads are connected to the head board, and the Varnish head is still not connected.
• Turn on the printer (Main switch on, Power button next to the touch panel ON)

When power is applied to the board, if the red light in the middle lights up at the same time, then turns off at the same time after a while, and there is no flashing light after turning off, The white head is also communicating normally with the board, and it is not a white head problem.

However, if not, the white head data cable or the white head itself may be the problem.

First, let’s assume that the white head is normal.

 

Connecting the Varnish Head

• Same as Color, White, but after connecting the Varnish head
• Let’s assume that when power is supplied to the board, the red light in the middle does not turn off at the same time, and one light continues to blink even after it turns off.
• In this case, there may be two problems.
• The data cable connected to the board has been checked, so this side is normal,
• and the data cable connected to the print head may not be connected well.
• If this is okay, the DATA cable itself may be defective,
• or the head itself may be problematic.

Replace the DATA cable with a new one, or if that doesn’t work, replace the print head with a new one to solve the problem.

If the light in the middle of the head board is normal after connecting all three heads to the board, you can proceed with printing.

 

Looking at the actual consumer issues,

• Most of them were caused by poor connection of the DATA cable connected to the board, and were resolved after checking the connection.
• However, in two cases, the board itself was problematic after the head was directly imported and connected (it is assumed that the board was damaged by reverse current flowing from the head).
• Another person said that the cable was connected ambiguously, so there were occasional errors, and as these errors continued for a long time, the board eventually broke down.
