Banding occurs in certain sections

1. “I hear a clicking sound on the X-axis.”

Today, I’m going to talk about an issue where banding occurs in Solid color in certain sections, but everything else is fine.

I. Problem symptoms _Banding occurs in certain sections

1. Bulk print order _Banding occurs in certain sections

My previous job was a company that developed inkjet inline equipment.

Our clients were mainly Samsung, LG, or their affiliates, and we occasionally printed and delivered genuine mobile cases in bulk whenever a new mobile phone product was released.

Since we had to print a lot in a short period of time, we ran the printer for 10 to 15 days in 24 hours.

Since we couldn’t work for 24 hours, once the initial zig and setting values were confirmed, we used the service ladies to print in two shifts for 24 hours.

Before calling the service ladies, it was the day we set the colors and work routine,

but strangely, banding occurred in a certain section.

2. Problem symptoms _Banding occurs in certain sections

The single-sheet size was 350 x 250 mm, and the flatbed size was 600 x 900 mm. Four PCs were placed on the plate at a time for printing.

In the photo below, an issue occurred where the colors did not appear as intended in the highlighted area.

It’s not visible when viewed from the front, but it becomes visible when the light is directed at an angle.

If the Y-axis is driven by a belt, the Y-axis movement won’t be accurate.

Is this a limitation of the belt-driven method?

Or is it more sensitive because it’s bidirectional printing rather than unidirectional?

I considered several options, but since I needed to work quickly, I decided to increase the G-mask by one level, even if it meant slower speeds, and proceeded with the work with less visible banding.

2. Disappeared banding _Banding occurs in certain sections

When we work during the day,

Out of the 4 PC plates, the front two plates are finished printing,
and when the two PC plates placed behind are somewhat printed and there is space to remove the front two PC plates,
we remove the front two PC plates while they are being printed and place two new PC plates on the plate again.
This was to proceed with printing while minimizing the time for placing materials.

Instructions for the Contractors

Since this was their first time using a UV printer, we gave the following instructions to the night shift workers:

Loading 4 sheets of material and proceeding with printing
To prevent errors from occurring when removing a PC during printing and replacing it with a new one,
After printing was completely completed, remove 4 sheets of material, place 4 new sheets of material, and then resume printing.

Disappeared banding

When we were working, even if we raised the G mask by one level, there was a slight banding,

but there was no banding in the work of the service workers, and even when we restored the G mask to its original state and printed it, there was no unusual banding.

3. Cause of the problem _Banding occurs in certain sections

I first met him in 2003, when he was a UV Printer AS employee, but now he works as a system engineer.

Before the service workers came, he worked for 2~3 hours,,, and eventually he found the cause.

“While working, sometimes I saw banding in the 4th section, sometimes in the 5th section, and sometimes there was no banding at all. Just in case, I waited until the end of the 4th print without removing the front material, and then there was no banding.”

“Did the fan power weaken while removing the material? Or did the Y-axis feeding value change slightly due to physical force while touching the flatbed with my hand?”

“I think so. The material height was slightly different due to the fan, and the feeding value was slightly different due to physical force. Since it was printed in both directions, it must have been more sensitive.”

4. Regular text, not solid color _Banding occurs in certain sections

The most difficult image for UV Printer is solid color printing.

Except for this solid color, this problem is not clearly visible for easy images or simple text.

When printing with a ballpoint pen, which takes a long time to load the material, this problem does not occur even if the material is placed during printing.

However, when printing with solid color, do not touch the flatbed during printing, and do not apply physical force by leaning against the X-axis frame.
