Today I’m going to explain what to do when the head crash message won’t go away.
I. General head collision prevention device _Head crash message won’t go away
1. Role _ Head crash message won’t go away
The head collision prevention device (HAD) is an auxiliary device that protects the head by immediately stopping the X-axis movement before the head collides with the material.
Once it is activated, the current print job must be restarted.
Head collision prevention devices are more common in UV printers than in regular inkjet printers.
The reason why this device is so popular in UV Printers is as follows:
Print materials of various heights
- Typical roll-to-roll inkjets have a small range of head height adjustments because the material thickness is similar.
- However, UV printers print on materials of varying heights, requiring head height adjustments.
- Sometimes, operators mistakenly print without adjusting the head height, resulting in collisions between the material and the head.
- To prevent this, a head collision prevention device was developed to stop the X-axis movement before the head collides with the material.
Heat from UV Light
- UV printers harden ink as soon as ink is fired on the material.
- Before LEDs became widespread, mercury lamps were used, generating heat so intense that a single exposure for more than five seconds could cause a fire.
- Materials sensitive to heat could bend the vacuum-absorbed material due to the repeated UV exposure during printing, causing the print head to scratch the substrate.
- To prevent the print head from constantly scratching the substrate, a head collision prevention device was developed.
- While the widespread adoption of LEDs has significantly alleviated the UV heat problem, the LED heat hasn’t completely disappeared, so head collision prevention devices are still useful.
Limitations of Vacuum or Suction
- Vacuum is strong when all the holes are blocked, but if even a few are open, its grip on the material weakens.
- The UV heat applied during printing causes the material to warp, causing material in areas not held by the vacuum to rise and collide with the print head, often resulting in problems.
- This also led to the development of a head collision prevention device.
2. It’s just an auxiliary device _Head crash message won’t go away
A head collision prevention device doesn’t protect the head in all cases.
The head collision prevention device lowers slightly below the base of the head to stop movement before a head collision.
For example, if the material thickness is 100mm and the head height is set to 5mm, it won’t prevent the head carriage itself from colliding with the material.
Furthermore, the head collision prevention device can’t compensate for the height difference between the print head and the anti-crash device.
As such, the head collision prevention device is a supplementary device for head protection.
Although it’s a supplementary device, it plays a significant role in head protection.
II. ARTJET UV Printer _Head crash message won’t go away
1. How it works _ Head crash message won’t go away
There are two silver boxes, one on each side of the print head carriage.
When moving from right to left, it stops if it encounters something.
Conversely, when moving from left to right, it stops if it encounters something.

If you look at the bottom of the silver box, you’ll see a rod.
During printing, if this rod hits a high point (due to heat or weak vacuum) where the material is warped,
the moving head carriage stops immediately at the point where the rod has risen.

When the head carriage stops, the following message will appear in the software program.
This indicates that the print head collision mechanism has been activated and that you should check the material being printed and take action.
The steps are as follows:
- Make sure to remove the material being printed from the flatbed, ensuring there is nothing on the flatbed.
- Then, when you click the “OK” button in the message below, the stopped carriage will start moving, and the software will return to normal operation.

Please refer to the video below to get a feel for how the rod rises.
2. Head crash message won’t go away
Sometimes, after the head collision prevention device is activated, the software message persists.
Even if you click OK, the message below will not disappear.

This problem occurs when the head collision prevention bar is raised but not released.
The head collision prevention system remains active, and initialization fails even after the software is turned on again.
In this case, manually raise and lower the head collision prevention bar and restart.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete on the computer keyboard to force quit the ARTJET software in Task Manager.
- Turn off the Power button on the Touch Panel.
- Switch off the main power switch on the rear side of printer.
- In this state, both the X-axis head carriage and the Y-axis flat bed can be moved manually, that is, by pushing them.
- Push the flat bed back to make room for the anti-crash bar so that it can be reached by hand.
- Raise and lower the anti-crash bar, and then change the switch from On to Off by engaging the bar.
- Repeat 3-4 times on both sides.
- Now, return the flat bed to the center, and position the head carriage back at the starting point of the flat bed.
- The reason the flatbed and head carriage are positioned this way is because if they’re pushed to the end of each axis, they could easily pass the limit sensor, causing an error when connecting the software.

III. This is how ARTJET supports our customers.
One thing I feel while selling and maintaining ARTJET UV Printers for 5 years is that the next most important thing after product stability is Troubleshooting DATA.
All products have problems, whether they are actual equipment problems or consumer errors, and product stability is how easily and quickly you solve those problems.
We are organizing all the troubleshooting DATA as follows.
