Check and do leather UV printing
Let me tell you about the conditions and precautions required to print natural leather and artificial leather with a UV Printer.
I. “Can it be printed on leather?” _Check and do leather UV printing
1. Let’s talk about the market for a moment. _Check and do leather UV printing
About 10 years ago, one of the Louis Vuitton bags was printed on leather with a UV Printer.
It was a UV Printer from Italy’s Durst, and I thought, ‘UV printers have finally entered the leather market! ‘
However, contrary to expectations, UV printers were not very active in the leather market.
Instead of UV printers. In China which is fast,
pre-processing + printing with existing solvent ink + post-processing, a cheap and durable leather printing solution was developed,
and after that, the leather printing volume used this solution developed by China.
As leather printing became possible with a cheap solution, expensive UV printers were pushed out of the leather market.
2. Small quantity production of various varieties _Check and do leather UV printing
Mass production is done with Chinese solutions, but some companies are doing small-quantity customized production with UV printing.
Sometimes, people who do small-quantity or customized printing ask about leather printing.
My answer is a bit negative, and I have no choice but to ask additional questions.
“By any chance, after printing on the fabric, how many times do you fold it to make the final product? Like a wallet?”
“Do you just UV print on the final product?”
“Is it artificial leather? Is it natural leather?”
“If it’s natural leather, is it coated? Should I just print on the leather?”
“How many years should the UV printing last? Should it last about 6 months?”
In conclusion, UV printing is possible on leather, but whether it can be printed depends on the final product.
II. Factors to Consider _Check and do leather UV printing
1. Is it natural leather? Is it artificial leather? _Check and do leather UV printing
The reason why people ask whether it is artificial leather or natural leather is because of the adhesion of the ink to the material after UV printing.
I have met many customers while selling UV printers for 20 years and there was a big difference in adhesion depending on the type of leather.
Uncoated natural leather
Natural leather is not smooth on the surface, so when UV printing is done, the color does not come out properly because it goes into the spaces between the edges.
Before color printing, you need to increase the white concentration a lot, and the color will come out properly.
Another problem is that the adhesion between the ink and the material is not good.
If you scratch it with your fingernail, there is a high probability that it will come off.
Coated natural leather
People who work with leather a lot say that,
Uncoated leather has a somewhat messy surface, and most people coat it to make it look neat.
Compared to uncoated natural leather, the surface is smooth, so ink is not absorbed, and the color expression is good.
However, depending on the type of coating, the adhesion can be good or bad.
Artificial leather
Based on my experience testing leather printing so far, I can say that most of the printing works well and the adhesion is strong. Of course, it may vary depending on the material.
2. How many times do you fold it? _Check and do leather UV printing
Natural leather, which does not express colors well and has poor adhesion, will be excluded.
When printing on coated natural leather or artificial leather, how many times should the printed surface be folded? Is it possible to make the final product without folding it? It is also important.
UV ink is largely divided into two types.
- Hard UV ink, which is hard but has strong surface scratch resistance.
- Medium or soft UV ink, which is soft but has weak surface scratch resistance.
Most leather materials contain a certain color rather than a white background. The color must be covered with white and the color must be printed to obtain the correct color.
If the white concentration is low, the color of the leather surface may rise, and the CMYK Lc Lc ink color may not be expressed properly.
For this reason, when printing on dark-colored leather, the white is applied thickly to cover the dark color of the background as much as possible.
In other words, the ink thickness cannot help but be thick.
When the leather is printed thickly and the leather surface is folded twice or three times to make a wallet, the printed ink will spread out or break. If you print it this way and fold it several times to make a product, you should use medium or soft UV ink.
If you use hard ink, the printed ink may break or fall off.
However, if the ink is too soft, the leather folding process is fine because it has good flexibility, but the surface scratch resistance is weak, so scratch marks may be visible when scratched with a fingernail.
Since each manufacturer has a different definition of medium and soft UV ink, even if the seller says, “There is no problem with leather printing because there is medium and soft ink,” you should print on the leather you have, fold it, scratch it with a fingernail, and check with your eyes whether the product can be applied.
3. Durable _Check and do leather UV printing
UV ink adhesion varies significantly depending on the material.
If the material you are using has strong UV ink adhesion, it will last for more than a year,
but if not, it should be applied to fancy products that last only about 6 months.
When making products with leather UV printing, you must check the adhesion before deciding on the product use.
4. Easy-to-apply leather printing _Check and do leather UV printing
I made a gift for my club members by putting their initials on a leather cigarette case.
- It is made of artificial leather,
- and it is a pre-made product that will not be folded,
- and it is a product that will be touched frequently, so I applied hard UV ink.
