Bi Uni Print Quality Differences

If you use a UV Printer, you know the difference in quality between unidirectional and bidirectional printing.

Why? Let me explain why there is a difference in print quality.

 

I. Printing method _Bi Uni Print Quality Differences

When looking at the printer from the front,

When printing, the head carriage moves back and forth from right to left and left to right.

And, the head carriage moves back and forth along the Y axis, or the flatbed moves forward, little by little. This is called feed or feeding in inkjet.

The unidirectional printing method is as follows.

 

  • The head carriage moves from right to left (or left to right) along the X-axis, jetting ink.
  • When the head carriage has moved from right to left, it returns to the right, and this time, ink is not jetted.
  • Y-axis feeding is performed.
  • Again, the head carriage moves along the X-axis, jetting ink.
  • When it returns, ink is not jetted.
  • And then Y-axis feeding again.

When the head carriage moves like this, printing begins, and when it returns, printing does not begin. Printing in one direction is called unidirectional printing.

Since I explained uni directional printing, let me put it simply,

  • The head carriage moves from right to left (or left to right) along the X-axis, jetting ink.
  • When the head carriage has moved from right to left, it returns to the right, and ink is also jetted at this time.
  • The flat Y-axis feeding is performed.
  • Again, the head carriage moves along the X-axis, jetting ink.
  • Of course, ink is also jetted when it returns.

Jetting ink both when the head carriage moves and when it moves back is called bidirectional printing.

‘Since it prints both when going and when returning, bidirectional printing is twice as fast as unidirectional printing.’

You might think this way, but in reality, bidirectional printing is not twice as fast as unidirectional printing, but about 1.8 times faster.

In bidirectional printing, the head carriage speed is the same when going and returning based on the X-axis,

but in unidirectional printing, when returning without jetting ink, the head carriage speed is about 30% faster.

In unidirectional printing, the number of head carriage round trips is twice that of bidirectional printing, but the head carriage return speed is higher, so the productivity does not differ by more than twice.

If the UV Printer has the offset function properly,

and the UV Printer is set up mechanically as well as possible,

those who are new to UV Printers will not be able to tell the difference in print quality.

Those who are using UV Printers need to tell us the specific differences so that we can feel the difference.

However, those who use UV Printers and deliver actual final products, look at the “roughness” and proceed with one-way printing unless there are special cases.

 

3. Why print quality varies _Bi Uni Print Quality Differences

When ink is jetted from the print head nozzle, the instantaneous speed is about 7 meters per second.

And the speed at which the head carriage moves is 0.8 meters per second.

No matter how fast the ink falls, it is affected by the X-axis movement and the ink falls slightly to the side as shown below.

The opposite direction is equally affected.

That’s why there is a window to adjust the bidirectional printing offset so that ink falls on the same spot when printing from right to left and left to right.

However, no matter how well the offset is adjusted, if the flatbed flatness is more than 0.2 mm, the offset will not be correct in that section.
