Print with 3D effect using a UV printer

Today, I will explain how to print a three-dimensional(let’s say 2.5D) elephant instead of simply printing it in color as shown below.

 

I. Create file _Print with 3D effect using a UV printer

 

1. Create texture with white _Print with 3D effect using a UV printer

The photo image texture is created through white printing, and the finished print is printed by printing color on top of it. When you look at the actual printed image, you can feel the three-dimensionality, and you can feel the texture when you touch it.

 

2. Creating a white spot color channel in Photoshop

Those who have used UV Printers for a long time, even those who are in the equipment sales business, know that “white is only a spot color, not a gradient like 0~100%!!”.
However, there is one way.

This function is not available in the Illustrator program, but only in Photoshop.

After creating an alpha channel, if you adjust the level of the alpha channel through the [Image => Adjustment => Level] window and create a spot color designation, white will be printed according to that level, not as a flat surface.

II. ARTJET SW print method _Print with 3D effect using a UV printer

After creating an image through Photoshop, the printing method is similar to the Braille printing method explained previously.

After adjusting the desired height from 100 to 800%, white is printed, and the color is expressed in the end.

100 to 800% is related to the white layer, and if it is 100%, the same section is printed once, which is the same as the general image printing method.

200% is a function that prints the same section twice, and 800% is a function that prints the same section eight times.

The White density at the bottom must be set to 100% unconditionally to print a large amount of white at once.

III. It’s unusual, but is it practical? _Print with 3D effect using a UV printer

When I first showed the Braille application using the UV Printer, almost everyone said, “It would take too much time to increase the thickness like this, so it wouldn’t be useful!!”
95% of the customers we met said that, and 5% showed curiosity.

The two companies that use ARTJET specifically order white and varnish, and both are creating high added value by printing images that include Braille.

 

2. Representative who signed a 2-year contract through various applications _Print with 3D effect using a UV printer

   

Sometimes, when I visit the CEO’s office, he shows me products I haven’t seen before.
The product itself seems to be okay, but it wasn’t very active of sales.

3. Texture expression that is difficult to achieve with Japanese equipment _Print with 3D effect using a UV printer

 

‘Japanese equipment is expensive but good.‘ Rather than thinking, I think it is important to understand the pros and cons of each equipment.

 

In the case of UV printers using expensive print heads, if there is 1 color print head, max 2 print head are used for white, that is, 200% of the color.
To express color with CMYK on transparent or colored materials, white is printed on the background, but sometimes 200% white is not enough for white density.
Or, it is not enough to cover background colors such as black.
In the same vein, if you want to express braille or texture using 200% white, you need to print three times more than ARTJET with 600% white.

 

For example, Braille:

With ARTJET, you have to print 600% 8 times (4,800%) to get close to the height of the Braille standard, so
when the Japanese equipment is 200%, to match 4800%, you have to print 4800÷200= 24 times.

In order to express the texture of the elephant image, Japanese equipment takes much longer, so the price cannot be set high,
but ARTJET does not take as long as Japanese equipment, so you can set a more reasonable price.

In the case of Japanese equipment with a long history, you can understand the image creation method, but for this economic reason, Braille or three-dimensional images seem to have not been activated.

When I meet people I know who run print shops with UV printers, they sometimes ask, “I don’t care how much it costs, can it achieve this effect?” It is said that there are people who say.
