Primer performance and limitation
I. Can I print on metal or glass? _Primer performance and limitation
1. Adhesion that even the seller didn’t know about _Primer performance and limitation
When I was working at a UV printer development company in 2004, I thought development was complete once it was printed.
‘Adjust basic colors through Rip software.‘ There was no concept of
At the top of the UV Printer Brochure
“UV Printer that can print on all materials”
After doing marketing and meeting one or two customers, we learned that while printing on bathroom tiles, glass, and iron plates, the printed ink was scratched and could not be used.
From then on, the phrase “UV Printer can print on all materials” was omitted, and the brochure was changed to list the materials that can be printed.
2. First commercialized inkjet primer _Primer performance and limitation
For me, it was the 3rd UV Printer development manufacturer.
It was a listed ink manufacturing company, and I joined the company when it launched its UV Printer division.
In early 2009, it was time to decide on the UV Printer concept.
The owner has a doctorate in chemistry,
“As an ink manufacturer and equipment developer, what can we do that only we can do, other than what everyone else is doing?”
“There are materials that do not have adhesion, such as glass, tile, and steel plate, and as long as adhesion is secured to these materials,,,,,”
And, the president said to the UV ink development researcher and the equipment development researcher
“Then, the development team leader can decide on an equipment concept that can jet the primer with an inkjet, and the ink development team leader can create the primer.”
Development was completed over the course of a year, discarding numerous print heads.
* Once functionality appears, leave it for 3 days and block the print head.
* If the print head is fine, functionality is poor,
3. And then I learned about the limitations of primer _Primer performance and limitation
UV Printer sales were mainly overseas, and about a year later, we received a report about problems with the primer.
“The ink that adhered well to the glass when delivered begins to fall off after six months.”
The photo below is a printout printed on a steel plate and is similar to these symptoms.
It is just example picture which is done by other UV Printer instead of ARTJET UV Printer.

As I figured out the cause of the problem, I learned about the limitations of the primer and added a cautionary note to the primer.
“Primer strengthens ink adhesion, but you must conduct an alcohol, tape, and humidity test on the material to be used to determine whether or not to apply it.”
Generally, after printing on a material, the adhesion test is carried out as shown in the YouTube process below. Please see.
Primer performance and limitation
Also, we do not sell primer.
* There are so many different materials,
* Without knowing what environmental conditions it will be in after printing,
* Unfortunately, it may cause problems later, so it is not for sale.
II. Doesn’t the primer block the print head? _Primer performance and limitation
1. Test nozzle condition when not in use _Primer performance and limitation
When we first developed Primer, many print heads were discarded.
Functionality was secured and the print head nozzle did not block after the weekend, but
“Vacations are long in Europe, but what happens if you leave for more than a week?”
“After leaving it for 2 weeks, it will be difficult, but if you can clear the clogged print head nozzle with purge + cleaning, let’s see if it’s okay!!”
We made it to this level and sold Inkjet primer, but after that, we often hear complaints.
“The primer print head is becoming more and more clogged, so I purged + cleaned for several hours, but the clogged nozzle cannot be unclogged at all.”
2. Japanese product overcomes primer limitations through automatic cleaning _Primer performance and limitation
Some may speculate that ‘Japan’s own primer is good,’ but more than that, small Japanese UV printers have an automatic cleaning device.
After a certain period of time, the ink is removed and the print head is automatically cleaned.
No matter how difficult the ink is, if you clean it regularly, the problem of print head nozzle clogging is bound to be reduced.
3. Korean level _Primer performance and limitation
“Is it Korean ink? Is it Chinese ink?”
This question contains the implicit meaning that ‘Chinese ink is bad and Korean ink is better.’
Unfortunately, how many companies in Korea that produce inkjet ink do QC and systematically produce them?
There are not as many as you might think.
One of the most important factors for companies that systematically produce inkjet ink is “whether there are any problems after delivery.”
It would be worth supplying inkjet primers that the market is constantly looking for, but this is why large companies do not supply them.
Sometimes, I have a hard time finding inkjet primers on the Internet, but they are from small companies rather than large companies, and what is more worrisome is that several print head models are written on the primer bottle.
The fact that multiple print heads can be used universally is proof that they are not optimized for a specific print head.
4. Chinese level _Primer performance and limitation
If you ask the same question as Korea,
“How many companies in China that produce inkjet ink do QC and systematically produce?”
I don’t know either.
But one thing is certain,
Before Chinese ink manufacturers became active, most Chinese UV printers used ink from excellent companies such as Sunjet in the UK, Agfa in Belgium, and Toyo ink in Japan.
China had high standards for UV ink, and now that Chinese-made ink is becoming more active,
I think Chinese ink is at the level of ink made by excellent overseas companies.
China also does not supply inkjet primer for small UV printers.
I think it is a decision made for the same reason as companies that systematically produce inkjet ink in Korea, that is, they were concerned about “whether there will be problems after delivery.”
5. InkJet ink primer manufactured in Europe _ Primer performance and limitation

This is an InkJet Primer applied to a model that is no longer being sold.
This is a model that used the Xaar1201 print head 4 years ago. Its functionality varies depending on the type of metal.
Although the adhesiveness was strengthened in terms of functionality, there was a problem with the nozzle clogging over time.
I also applied it to the XP600 print head for testing,
* but I had to increase the voltage too much,
* and even then, a lot of ink flew to the side, so I gave up on applying it.
III. Manual Primer _Primer performance and limitation
I will talk about small UV printers only.
The equipment that uses inkjet primer stably is Japanese equipment.
Currently, in the case of Chinese or Korean equipment, they sometimes say ‘it can be used’, but we need to wait and see whether it is stable.
However, some of those who actually use UV printers are manually applying primer liquid instead of inkjet primer.
* Apply primer to cotton and apply it to the material,
* UV print on it
* Wipe off the unprinted part with alcohol, etc., and you’re done.
However, even if you endure this inconvenience, there are a few more things to consider.
* One primer does not work on all materials, and the primer type varies depending on the material, such as glass, acrylic, and metal.
* One of the users of the ARTJET UV Printer applied a metal primer and delivered it to a government office, but the ink fell off due to the humidity in the summer, In other words, there is no guarantee that “the functionality will be there after printing, and there will be no problems later.”
* Since it is applied manually, and the parts where the ink is not printed are wiped off, and the work time is a cost, In other words, small-scale work will be done somehow, but for large-scale work, you should set the output unit price by considering the work time.
IV. This is how Artjet supports our customers.
One thing I feel while selling and maintaining ARTJET UV Printers for 5 years is that the next most important thing after product stability is Troubleshooting DATA.
All products have problems, whether they are actual equipment problems or consumer errors, and product stability is how easily and quickly you solve those problems.
Since words alone are not convincing, we are organizing all the troubleshooting DATA as follows,
and sharing the Daily nozzle test through ARTJET demo equipment.
