Today, I’m going to explain the problem of stains appearing on non-printed surfaces while printing on the leather of a book cover.

 

I. Strange stains _Why do stains appear when printing on leather

 

It’s coated leather, and I printed only white on brown leather…

“Team Leader, there were no stains at first, but when I printed, they appeared as you indicated in red. The fabric showed similar symptoms. Could the varnish have worn off during printing?”

I suspect the varnish has come off.

• While this isn’t the cause of the problem, to address the CEO’s concerns,
• I locked the varnish (activated the channel lock function in the ARTJET SW) and proceeded with printing => The same issue occurred.

 

Does oil residue form on areas touched by hand, causing stains after printing?

• I’ve seen similar stains occur when the oil residue is cured by the LED after touching the material. I’ve asked several times,
• but CEO stated that he only handled the outer surface of the coated leather. => This isn’t the cause of the issue.

 

Could it be that the LED heat has deformed the material itself?

• “Sir, the ink will smear, but I suspect it’s the lamp heat. Please turn off the lamp and print the same way.”

=> The ink smeared, but the spots that were not visible on the printed surface have disappeared.

2. Solve_Why do stains appear when printing on leather

The problematic material is currently used only by the CEO, and we don’t have it. So, I told him the following:

“CEO, the staining seems to be due to the heat from the lamp. You need to adjust the lamp power to ensure the ink cures and no staining occurs.”

“How do I adjust the lamp power?”

“There’s a power control knob on the lamp. Please increase it to 20%, 30%, etc., and test it.”

“At 40% lamp power, there are no stains and the white is adhered well.”

I’ve been selling UV printers for over 15 years, testing both synthetic and natural leather, and have never had this issue.

This issue with leather seems to have arisen because the coating is sensitive to heat.

 

3. LED Lamp Power_Why do stains appear when printing on leather

According to the lamp manufacturer, lamp lifespan is prolonged when used at 70-80% power.

Using lamps at 100% power reduces their lifespan.

Our own testing indicates that lamp power must be at least 30-40% to cure ink during printing.
