23. After Color+White printing, I will explain the time and ink cost for Color printing and double-sided printing.

Today, I will explain how to create a white shield with different images on the front and back when making a keychain.
I. Request _Different images with white shielding
“Team Leader, this keychain has different images on the front and back, and they shouldn’t be visible. Is that possible?”
“No matter how much I increase the white, if the background color is dark, it’ll still show through. To completely mask the different images when printing on the front and back,
Image A => white => gray => black => gray => white => B image, they print in 7 layers.”
“If I do that, the ink thickness will be too high, and it won’t work well when bonding the acrylic.”
“I’ll increase the white density and test it first.”
When painting, you need to apply white several times on a black wall to make it white.
Inkjet printing is even more challenging because you have to cover it with ink droplets.
After several tests, I created a keychain with different images on the front and back and delivered it to the supplier.
I’ll explain the assumptions made during testing and the conditions applied to the final delivered sample.
II. White Density adjustment _Different images with white shielding
1. White 300% _Different images with white shielding
You can adjust the white density by going to Menu => Spot Colors Setting and moving the cursor within the dotted line under “White Ink Density.”

Image A => White 300% => Image B
First, I printed in the default mode of 300% White.
As you can see on the right screen, Channels 1 through 6 are K, C, M, Y, Lc, and Lm,
and Channels 7 through 12 are all White channels, meaning there are six nozzles that spray White.
Therefore, if I set the White Ink Density to 50%,
the White is actually printed at 300% of the color (6 channels x 50% = 300%).
After printing in 300% white, I took a quick look and saw that Image B was visible through Image A, even without fluorescent lighting.
2. White 600% _Different images with white shielding
Image A => White 600% => Image B
I increased the White ink density to 100% (6 channels x 100% = 600%) and printed the White at 600%.
Since I only increased the Channel ink density from 50% to 100%, the printing speed remained the same.
While it was slightly improved over White 300%, the B image still appeared to be visible through the A image, even without fluorescent lighting.
III. Add a gray layer _Different images with white shielding
1. Layer configuration and file saving _Different images with white shielding
The printing process was as follows:
Image A => white => gray => white => B image
The AI file is structured as follows:
- Image A Layer,
- Image B Layer,
- White Spot Layer,
- Gray Image Layer,
I saved the print file in three stages.
- Printing File 1: White spot, Image A => Print Image A and White.
- Printing File 2: Gray, White spot => Print Gray over Print 1, while also printing the White spot.
- Printing File 3: Image B, Crop mark => Finally, print Image B.
Through these three prints, I printed five layers: Image A => White => Gray => White => Image B.
2. Print results _Different images with white shielding
Using the auto print function, I printed files 1, 2, and 3 in sequence, testing two white densities.
- While printing at 300% white yielded a clear improvement, I felt it was somewhat lacking.
- Printing at 420% white yielded a clear improvement, but it wasn’t perfect.
The ideal method would be Image A => White => Gray => Black => Gray => White => Image B. However, this approach was time-consuming and expensive, so I opted not to do it.
Instead, I followed the steps below, even if it was slightly brighter, before proceeding with the actual printing.
Image A => White (420%) => Gray => White (420%) => Image B
3. Acrylic bonding and additions _Different images with white shielding
If the ink layer is too thick, it could cause defects during acrylic bonding, so I used 420% instead of 600% white.
With 420% white applied to the front and back of the gray, the total is 840%.
- Even at 840% white, the front and back images still show through slightly, suggesting that white alone isn’t completely shielding.
- The darker the front and back images, the more severe the shielding problem.
- The lighter the front and back images, the less visible the shielding problem.
- If the front and back images are dark and the customer wants perfect shielding, I’d recommend setting a higher price and following this order:
- Image A => white => gray => black => gray => white => Image B.
IV. This is how ARTJET supports our customers.
One thing I feel while selling and maintaining ARTJET UV Printers for 5 years is that the next most important thing after product stability is Troubleshooting DATA.
All products have problems, whether they are actual equipment problems or consumer errors, and product stability is how easily and quickly you solve those problems.
We are organizing all the troubleshooting DATA as follows.
