Today, I’ll show you how to make an acrylic keychain using a UV printer and laser.
I. Manufacturing process _Making a keychain with a UV printer laser
1. Same process as the mobile phone griptok _Making a keychain with a UV printer laser
It is the same process as the mobile phone griptok production explained previously. Please refer to the details below.

2. With the introduction of acrylic bonding _Making a keychain with a UV printer laser
Keychains were sold on 3mm-thick acrylic with CWC back printing.
However, this method exposed the ink, requiring strong adhesion to the acrylic and a hard ink that wouldn’t scratch with a fingernail.
Until 2019, almost all companies produced keychains this way.
However, one company developed and began using an acrylic bonding machine.
- After printing the CWC back on 2mm-thick acrylic,
- they bonded a 1mm unprinted acrylic,
- and then laser-cut the keychain.
Bonding prevented the ink from being exposed, solving adhesion issues, contamination, and everyday scratches.
Furthermore, the image visible through the front and back transparent acrylic enhanced the print quality.
Afterwards, other companies also began to introduce bonding, and now many companies use bonding machines.

1. The fear of being new _Making a keychain with a UV printer laser
After selling UV printers for over 15 years, when I first brought in laser cutting equipment,
- the manual was poorly written.
- I experienced many ups and downs installing the software program.
- I also encountered many ups and downs installing additional cameras and crop mark cutting programs.
I introduced laser cutting equipment to sell alongside UV printers, and I was still learning. After all these ups and downs, I was afraid to sell. So I gave up selling laser equipment and learning more.
After that, whenever I needed laser cutting, I hired an engineer to do it for me.
Then, after finally learning it, I was able to cut in less than an hour.
It was easier than I expected.
You can learn laser cutting by simply watching the video below.
Most Chinese-made laser cutting equipment uses the RD Works program.
You can perform crop mark cutting by following the laser crop mark cutting video at the end of the video.
2. CCD? Camera cut? Crop mark cutting? _Making a keychain with a UV printer laser
This is all the same, and I’ll explain crop marks, which are crucial for camera cutting.
Before that, please refer to the following for the principle of how the laser aligns the cutting position after UV printer printing.
Crop Mark Display Format
- The black circles in the photo below are called crop marks.
- Most crop marks are created by creating a black circle on a large white area.
- The white border is used to ensure the black crop mark is easily visible on camera.

Black Crop Mark Circle Diameter
- Chinese laser equipment using the RD Works program recognized crop marks with a diameter of at least 5mm.
- When tested with a diameter of up to 10mm, the camera recognized the marks correctly, and crop marks between 5mm and 10mm seemed to work fine.
- It seems that most people use a default diameter of 6mm.
Number of Crop Marks
- The camera recognizes and cuts even with just two crop marks.
- However, due to camera error, cutting errors can occur with only two crop marks.
- To minimize this error, a minimum of four crop marks is required.
- In practice, five crop marks are the default.
Also, the larger the image to be cut, the higher the chance of errors. Therefore, most acrylics are typically cut to a standard size of 300 x 600.
If the crop mark is too close to the image,
If the crop mark is too close to the printed image, the camera will recognize the circular image surrounding the image as a crop mark.
In this case, an error message will appear indicating that the camera failed to recognize the crop mark because the crop mark is not located in the image file.
If the camera fails to recognize the crop mark,
- you can either cover the circular image on the acrylic print with masking tape.
- You can also create a gap between the crop mark and the image from the beginning to exclude the circular image from the camera’s detection range.
- In the RD Works camera program, you need to reduce the camera’s detection range to recognize the crop mark.
3. Concerns about Chinese-made laser cutting machines _Making a keychain with a UV printer laser
“American and German products do not catch fire when cutting acrylic, but Chinese laser cutting equipment catches fire when cutting.”
Opinions may vary from user to user, but I have seen cases where German equipment caught fire.
This part is related to the laser cutting power and speed settings, and the wind speed used during cutting.
Of course, there are differences depending on the type of acrylic used.
“American and German products have right-angled cutting surfaces, but Chinese laser cutting equipment does not.”
Whether the laser source is perpendicular or not depends on the angle, the reflector mirror settings, and the flatness of the plate.
This depends on the level of engineers setting up the equipment.
For high-end equipment vendors, this issue is unlikely to occur often due to their high quality control standards.
However, this situation can arise if Chinese equipment is imported and sold without sufficient research.
“American and German products have shiny and clean cutting surfaces, but Chinese laser cutting equipment does not.”
This part is the laser cutting power and speed settings, and the acrylic itself.
In particular, there is a huge difference depending on the acrylic material.
Some acrylics are shiny, but they tend to light up and go out when cut,
and some acrylics don’t light up well, but after cutting, the grain is more visible for some reason,,
You need to find the right material after testing various acrylics.
“A few things to acknowledge”
The laser source is CO2, so there are times when the laser power jumps.
For this reason, it is difficult to make elaborate assemblies using the laser, but it is not a big problem to use it for cutting purposes such as key rings.
In fact, I have seen people using Japanese equipment for UV printers, but Chinese equipment for cutting.
Also, it is better to use dedicated engraving equipment rather than cutting equipment for engraving.
III. This is how ARTJET supports our customers.
One thing I feel while selling and maintaining ARTJET UV Printers for 5 years is that the next most important thing after product stability is Troubleshooting DATA.
All products have problems, whether they are actual equipment problems or consumer errors, and product stability is how easily and quickly you solve those problems.
We are organizing all the troubleshooting DATA as follows.
