Today, I’ll give you a simple explanation of the concept of ICC profile, a term everyone knows when using inkjet.

I. ICC profile Concept _ICC Profile Concept Explained Easily

1. The difference between having an ICC profile and not having one _ ICC Profile Concept Explained Easily

Four years ago, when we were installing an ARTJET UV Printer at a customer site, we had to complete the ARTJET SW training and provide Sai RIP training, but we realized we hadn’t brought the ICC profile file. It was Saturday, and no one was in the office.

“CEO, please proceed with the RIP training as is, and apply the ICC profile later when I send you the information.”

We printed the test image and conducted the training, but the color mismatch continued to bother us.

Finally, we contacted someone who lived near our office and received the ICC profile via KakaoTalk.

After applying the ICC profile, the CEO looked at the printed image and said,

“Actually, I didn’t mention it before applying the ICC profile, but it was a bit awkward. But after applying it, the colors are great and I’m very happy with it.”

2. What is ICC and what is profile? _ ICC Profile Concept Explained Easily

International Color Consortium profile. Overview of the International Color Consortium.

To put it simply, it’s “the definition or scope of colors established by the Color Association.”

Up to this point, I’ve explained it similarly in other articles.

When I first encountered this concept, I didn’t know what it meant, and it wasn’t until much later that I finally grasped its meaning.

II. ICC Profile Concept Explained Easily

1. If each person claims that their own color is correct, _ ICC Profile Concept Explained Easily

Let’s imagine a printing shop before the advent of digital inkjet.

There are four printing shops, let’s call them A, B, C, and D.

Customer S requests “Please print a red sample” from only three printing shops: A, B, and C.

Soon after, customer S receives red paper samples printed by all three printing shops.

However, the red color varies slightly from each of the three shops.

Customer S then asks printing shops A, B, and C, “Which color is the true red?”

Printing shops A, B, and C all claim to have created the correct red color, but the argument continues without a conclusion.

Customer S, tired of the inconclusive results from print shops A, B, and C, simply places a bulk order with print shop D.

Thus, print shops A, B, and C go out of business, while print shop D is the only one who makes a killing.

2. Let’s agree on a color that suits each color. _ ICC Profile Concept Explained Easily

The owners of failing printing companies A, B, and C meet by chance at a bar.
After a drink or two, the tension subsides, and they begin to explore ways to save their failing printing companies.

After much deliberation about how to avoid future color conflicts, they meet the next day.

The three owners each printed a red color on their own machines. After a lengthy agreement,

“Let’s match the red color to the color printed by Printing Company B.”

The three owners meet again the next day.

“Let’s match the blue color to the color printed by Printing Company A.”

And the next day, they continue to agree on colors,

and each time they reach an agreement, Printing Companies A, B, and C all retain that printed color, and they always mix colors to match that color.

A year passed,

and countless colors were agreed upon, and all three print shops, A, B, and C, had samples of those agreed-upon colors.

Now, when a customer asks, “Please print in red,”

Print shops A, B, and C all show their color charts and ask, “Is it a dark red? Is it a red with a yellowish tint?”

They show the color charts to the customer and ask them to specify the color.

By printing with the exact color the customer requested, all three print shops, A, B, and C, become extremely successful.

Now, the colors of these successful print shops, A, B, and C, become the industry standard.

On the other hand, Print shop D, lacking the color charts of Print shops A, B, and C and unable to match the colors, goes out of business.

The more successful print shops, A, B, and C, are part of the International Color Consortium profile.

International Color Collaboration (ICC) Overview: The International Color Collaboration (ICC) was established as an association to establish color standards.

Over time, all printing houses now have color charts created by the ICC and print according to those charts.

III. Inkjet’s ICC Profile _ICC Profile Concept Explained Easily

1. When a failed D printing company discovered Inkjet _ ICC Profile Concept Explained Easily

The owner of D Printing Company, whose business was failing, stumbled upon Inkjet.

“If Inkjet could match the standard colors set by Print Shops A, B, and C closely,”

he could print single sheets, not just mass quantities. He wouldn’t have to mix colors and experiment with them to get the right color.

If that were the case, it would be a huge hit.

The owner of D Printing Company met with a software developer.
He obtained the paper used by Print Shops A, B, and C, as well as the color charts they had set.

Let’s start with red again.

  • Using the four colors C, M, Y, and K, we matched the red color to the color chart determined by print shops A, B, and C.
  • We achieved this exact red color by mixing C, M, Y, and K in percentages.
  • The software developer then inputs each percentage into the software.

Now, we match the blue color again, re-determine the C, M, Y, and K ratios, and then input the blue value into the software again, based on those values.

As we continued this process, several patterns and logic emerged. Now, by simply inputting these patterns and logic, we can match similar colors.

This is how the logic for creating an ICC profile for an inkjet printer was born.

2. Let me briefly explain the process of creating an ICC Profile. _ICC Profile Concept Explained Easily

Creating an ICC profile means using an inkjet to achieve colors similar to the standard colors defined by the ICC.

The inkjet ICC profile creation process is largely divided into four steps:

Determining the maximum limits for each ink: C, M, Y, and K.

  • For each color, a gradient is printed from 0% to 100%, and the point where no further color change occurs is set as the limit for that ink.
  • For example, black ink naturally darkens from 0% to 80%, but above 80%, the black color no longer changes.
  • The maximum limit for black is set to 80%, and the black color is set to not drop below that limit.
  • The same process is performed for C, M, and K.

Re-creating C, M, Y, K, and High Limits into a smooth 0-100% gradient.

  • The previous task was to remove the high limit, where the color no longer changes.
  • Now, we’re going to redistribute the colors from 0 to 100% based on the removed high limit.
  • The high limit for black was 80%, and this 80% is considered the highest point of black, 100%.
  • This task is to evenly distribute the 0-80% range from 0 to 100%.

Determining the Maximum Limits of Representative Mixed Colors

  • Up until now, we’ve been working on creating maximum limits and smooth gradations for C, M, Y, and K inks.
  • However, when CMYK inks are mixed together, excessively dark colors are produced.
  • This process involves setting the limits for the darkest colors in the mixed colors.

Once these limits are set, the logic developed by the software developer is applied to the inkjet to create an ICC profile.

  • From here, the logic developed by the software developer is applied.
  • A color chart is printed and read by a device that reads it.
  • A software file is created that matches the colors to the color standards established by the Color Standards Institute.
  • When this software file is applied to the printer in use, the colors are rendered similarly to those defined by the ICC.

We call this file an ICC profile.

3. Factors Affecting InkJet ICC Profiles _ICC Profile Concept Explained Easily

If the print resolution changes, the ICC profile must be recreated to match the new resolution.

If the ink changes, the color values will be different from the original ink, so the ICC profile must be recreated to match the new ink.

Strictly speaking, the ICC profile must be recreated even if the printed material changes.

Not all white paper is the same white. It may have a slight yellow or blue tint.

However, this is ignored for UV printers, as it’s impossible to do this every time the material changes.

V. This is how ARTJET supports our customers.

One thing I feel while selling and maintaining ARTJET UV Printers for 5 years is that the next most important thing after product stability is Troubleshooting DATA.

All products have problems, whether they are actual equipment problems or consumer errors, and product stability is how easily and quickly you solve those problems.

We are organizing all the troubleshooting DATA as follows.
