Can you print the exact size?

Today, I’ll explain how to calculate ink consumption and printing costs when printing.

He’s a skilled user of ARTJET.
He maintains his equipment well and even adjusts colors in RIP to match the colors of his old printer.

“Team Leader, is there a way to calculate ink consumption?”

“Yes? I thought you knew.”

I. Ink consumption calculation principle _how much ink I’m using?

The principle is simpler than you might think.

To create color in an Ai file, multiply the total number of ink drops by the volume of each ink drop to get the total ink consumption.

1. Total number of ink drops falling on the image _how much ink I’m using?

The printer’s print head doesn’t know what the Ai file looks like. It simply ejects ink when an electronic signal is received and stops when one is not.

“In other words, the print head simply moves according to the electronic signal.”

Rip software recognizes the multi-color Ai file in Illustrator as C, M, Y, K, or C, M, Y, K, Lc, Lm, White, and Varnish.

  • An Ai file is a single file,
  • but if the printer is a four-color device and only prints colors, the Ai file is divided into C, M, Y, K, and four files are created through the RIP software.
  • If the printer has six colors plus White and Varnish, the Ai file is created through the RIP software as seven files: C, M, Y, K, Lc, Lm, White, and Varnish.
  • Using a special program, you can view the data processed by the RIP software for each channel, and all you see are black dots on white paper.

The dot data in the white space passes through the print head, ejecting ink only when a dot is present. No ink is ejected where there are no dots.

In other words, each dot data becomes a single ink droplet. Adding up all the dot data calculates the total number of ink drops ejected.

2. Capacity of one drop of ink _how much ink I’m using?

“This head is a 5-pico liter head.”

Yes, that’s correct. 5 pico liters is a unit of capacity, equal to 0.000000000005 liters.

Total number of ink drops x 0.000000000005 liters = ink consumption for the image.

II. Enter the Sai rip ink consumption option _how much ink I’m using?

1. Only images that have been ripped _how much ink I’m using?

Since the colors are recognized as C, M, Y, K or C, M, Y, K, Lc, Lm, White, and varnish only after ripping the Ai file,

the total ink drop count can only be determined for the ripped image.

If you only load the image into the RIP software and do not rip it, the ink consumption option window will not be activated.

I have completed ripping the ARTJET TEST image below. To briefly explain the image,

The horizontal and vertical sizes are as follows:

White was set to print across the entire file, and Varnish was set to go into the eyes, lips, and letters by spot.

2. Ink estimation options _how much ink I’m using?

When you select a ripped image, the “Estimate” option will become active.

Clicking “Estimate” will take you to an options window where you can view ink consumption.

III. Setting up the Ink Options window _how much ink I’m using?

1. Ink Estimation Options Window and Detailed Settings _how much ink I’m using?

how much ink I’m using?

Before pressing the Estimate button, you must enter appropriate values in [Preferences] and [Configuration].

First, I’ll explain [Preferences].

  • Clicking the [Preferences] button allows you to set whether to display ink usage in pl or ml.
  • Small images may not consume much ink, so displaying in ml may result in a low ink consumption of 0.
  • In this case, setting it to pl will allow you to see the ink consumption.

Clicking [Configure] will open the [Ink Estimation Configuration] options window, as shown above.

This will allow you to enter the total ink capacity and price of the ink bottle.

For example, a 200ml cartridge for a Roland UV Printer costs approximately 100,000 won.

  • Cartridge Capacity: 200ml
  • Price per Cartridge: 100,000 won
  • Enter the following:

2. Ink capacity and price, detailed explanation _how much ink I’m using?

This is important, so I’ll explain it again.

Let’s use ARTJET as an example.

In the Cartridge Capacity field, enter the capacity of the ink bottle you’re currently receiving.
In the Price per Cartridge field, enter the current ink price.

Some places sell ink in liters, while others sell it in kilograms.
Since it’s only displayed in liters, if you’re using kgs, ink is heavier than water, so roughly 950 ml is a good value.
White ink is heavier than color ink, but we’ll ignore that.

You can enter separate cartridge capacities and prices for each color. I’ll ignore that.

If you ignore this and use ARTJET,

  • Check “Same for all inks”: This window sets the CMYK Lc Lm, White, and Varnish to the same value.
  • The Cartridge Capacity field is displayed as 1000 in the image below, but 950 seems more realistic.
  • Enter 160,000 won for the cartridge price.

IV.  View ink consumption _how much ink I’m using?

1. Ink consumption as seen through Rip _how much ink I’m using?

Now everything is set up in Rip. As a reminder, we are dealing with the image below.

how much ink I’m using?

Can you tell me the ink consumption? Now, by clicking the [Estimate] button, you can find out the ink consumption and cost for CMYK Lc Lm, White, and Varnish.

Since the image size is quite large, I selected ml instead of pl in [Preferences].

The ink consumption and cost are calculated for C, M, Y, K, Lc, and Lm, with Spot 1 being White and Spot 2 being Varnish.

If the ink consumption includes White and Varnish, the data below cannot be used directly. Additional explanation is required.

2. Additional calculations for White and Varnish _how much ink I’m using?

White and Varnish need to be recalculated.

  • CMYK Lc Lm colors are output at a 1:1 ratio from the RIP data and the printer,
  • but White and Varnish are output through six print head channels in the ARTJET software,
  • and you can also set the output percentage.
  • This needs to be recalculated.

Since White and Varnish are six times the color, printing with the RIP data as is will result in a maximum output of 600%.
However, if all six channels are set to 100%, the white will be excessively high. Therefore, the ARTJET software provides a function to adjust the white density.
The image below confirms that White has six channels, and there is a density adjustment window (0-100%) at the bottom of each channel.

how much ink I'm using?
how much ink I’m using?

White and Varnish are set to 6 channels with a 50% density compared to the color. In this case, let’s explain the calculation formula for White:

  • CMYK Lc Lm uses Rip data as is, as the printer prints it 1:1.
  • However, White multiplies the Rip value by 0.45ml by 6 channels, and since all 6 channels are used at 50% (0.45 x 6 channels x 50% = 300%),
  • this results in 0.45ml x 3 = 1.35ml.

Varnish, calculated in the same way as White, is 0.03ml.

The ink consumption displayed in the Rip software is 0.97ml, and the total cost is ₩155.93.

However, if the updated White and Varnish are correctly calculated in the ARTJET software, the actual ink consumption is 1.9ml, and the cost is ₩303.12.

One thing I’d like to emphasize is that:

Color and Varnish can achieve good nozzle condition simply by cleaning, unless there are significant issues.

However, White requires both pumping and cleaning.
This results in significant ink consumption, so please consider the ink consumption for cleaning when providing your quote.

V. This is how ARTJET supports our customers.

One thing I feel while selling and maintaining ARTJET UV Printers for 5 years is that the next most important thing after product stability is Troubleshooting DATA.

All products have problems, whether they are actual equipment problems or consumer errors, and product stability is how easily and quickly you solve those problems.

We are organizing all the troubleshooting DATA as follows.
