Today we’ll be showing you how to get the exact print size in Sai Rip.

I. Why are the file and actual print sizes different? _Can you print the exact size?

1. Mechanical error _Can you print the exact size?

The difference between the image file size and the actual printed image size is the most common cause of error.
Inkjet completes the image by firing ink back and forth along the X and Y axes.

 

However,
the motors that drive the X and Y axes themselves have variations,
and the belts connected to them also have different tensions at each section, which also introduces errors.

  • No matter how precise the liner scale is,
  • No matter how high-quality the belt is,
  • or even the liner motor,

when measuring the commanded travel distance and the actual travel distance using precision laser measuring equipment, there can be discrepancies of over 100 µm.

As these errors accumulate, the print size can differ along the Y axis compared to the relatively short X axis.

 

2. Rip program size correction function _Can you print the exact size?

Almost all early inkjet printers used roll-to-roll technology, not flatbed printing, to print large-format items like banners along the Y axis.

Roll printing inherently has greater Y-axis positional errors than flatbed printing.

  • The travel distance varies depending on the material thickness.
  • If the material slips, this also affects the travel distance.
  • Furthermore, processing errors within the roll itself can also affect the travel distance.

To compensate for these errors, the RIP program includes a built-in size compensation function.

II. Size correction function principle _Can you print the exact size?

It’s very simple.

While the RIP program’s adjustment method varies by company, the operating principle is the same.

If the printer’s flatbed size is 2.5 x 1.2 meters, it creates a 2.5 x 1.2 meter square image (Ai file) for the actual printing.

The size correction method follows the same principles for the X and Y axes.

First, let’s explain using the relatively short Y axis.

  • Prepare an image file with a Y axis length of 1200 mm in the Ai file.
  • Print the Ai file using the printer.
  • Once printing is complete, measure the actual printed size with a tape measure.
  • Let’s assume the Y axis size measured with a tape measure is 1195 mm, not 1200 mm.
  • The default value in the RIP size correction options window is 1 or 100.
  • Here, we’ll assume it’s set to 1.

 

I printed 1200, but it came out as 1195mm.

  • 1200: 1195 = 1: X
  • X = (1195×1)/1200
  • X=0.99583333……
  • If I enter 0.99533 for the 1 value in the Rip Options window,
  • and reprint the file with the Y-axis set to 1200mm,
  • the image that was printed at 1195mm when the option value was 1,
  • now prints at 1200mm.

There are two ways to perform size correction.

Method No. 1, highlighted in yellow.

This is an options window that’s easy, but lacks detail.
The file print size is 300 (width) x 300 (length) mm. After printing, if you enter the measured size, the correction factor will automatically change.
This completes the size correction.
However, the ARTJET UV Printer print size is 600 x 899 mm.
After printing a 300 x 300 mm file, the actual size of the printed product can be measured with a ruler, and this measurement can also have errors.
Using this value, when printing a larger size (600 mm on the X-axis (width) or 899 mm on the Y-axis (length), errors not visible at 300 mm may occur.

 

Method No. 2, marked in red

This method involves not using the test print from Method No. 1,

but rather arbitrarily increasing the image size, measuring the actual printed image size with a ruler,

and then calculating that value and directly inputting it into the correction factor.

While a bit tedious, I recommend this method.

 

3. Practice _Can you print the exact size?

Create an AI file size of 600 x 899mm and print it using the ARTJET UV Printer.
After printing is complete, measure the actual printed size using a ruler.
For example, let’s assume the X-axis (width) is accurate at 600mm, and the Y-axis (length) is 895mm.

With a correction factor of 1.00000, the actual printed size of an 899mm image file is 895mm, so the following equation holds true:

899mm : 895mm = 1.00000 : X
899mm x X = 895mm x 1.00000
X = (895mm x 1.00000) / 899mm
X  = 0.99555

Instead of the length and correction factor of 1.000000, if you enter 0.99555, the Y-axis size will be corrected.

The 899mm Y-axis file will print at the same size as the actual image file, 899mm, not 895mm.

 

4. How to run when you want to increase it by 0.2mm _Can you print the exact size?

Large UV printers produce large print sizes, so if size correction isn’t performed, you’ll notice size discrepancies.
Users of large printers are aware of this feature and often use it themselves.

However, with small printers, because the print sizes are not large,

users often don’t pay much attention to it, and the actual size discrepancies are minimal.
However, there are rare instances where the print sizes are incorrect when printing large sizes. In such cases, the size correction feature can be used.
