Aligning the Captop and Head Position — Ink Supply Problems (Part 6)

⚠️ Precautions
  • When shifting the capping station forward or back, it can drift left or right — after confirming white pumping, always re-check color and varnish as well.
  • Even after finding the correct pumping position, cleaning must be verified separately — the ideal pumping and cleaning positions can differ slightly.
  • Before tightening the bolts, hold the block firmly in place by hand — the position can shift during tightening.
  • The X-axis (left/right) value is already set at the time of delivery and rarely needs to be changed under normal circumstances.

  • Following Part 5 which explained the concept of captop and head position, this part covers the hands-on process of manually aligning the position.
  • If pumping still fails after checking everything else, this method can resolve the issue.

II. Problem Symptoms _ Aligning the Captop and Head Position

💬 “The white head was just replaced and now inkload (pumping) isn’t working. The captop and yellow tube were both replaced not long ago.”
1. Checking Below the Captop

A. Alcohol comes through but white ink does not

When alcohol comes through but white ink does not, this can be a symptom of the captop and print head not forming a complete seal. The capping height was raised by 1 to strengthen the seal.

Path: [Menu] → [Print head cleaning setting] → [Elevator mechanism] → double-click [Capping height] → change value (e.g. 4→5) → [OK] → close window

B. Checking for air entering the captop lower tube

Even a slightly loose lower tube can allow alcohol through while air enters through the gap, preventing white ink from coming out. The captop lower tube was replaced and re-inserted fully to verify the seal.

💬 “Replaced it and pulled to confirm it’s seated — white ink still isn’t coming through.”

C. Captop lower side confirmed normal

  • Captop was replaced recently and was working fine before the head replacement
  • Capping height raised and seal re-verified
  • Air entry at captop lower tube checked and confirmed clear
  • Captop lower side assessed as normal
2. Checking Above the Captop

Common issues above the captop include air leaking from the ink tube connected to the damper, or the damper not being firmly seated in the head. The remaining 5 ink lines were bent and clamped off with cable ties to isolate the white line, then a syringe was used to draw from each damper one by one to check for bubbles.

💬 “Checked all of them — no damper is pulling excessive air. Pumping still isn’t working.”

Captop upper side (including damper) also confirmed normal

III. Problem Resolution _ Aligning the Captop and Head Position

1. How to Confirm It Is a Position Issue

Air leaks from the damper above the captop can be identified immediately with a syringe. The lower side involves multiple factors and requires cross-checking.

The color head Y-fitting was swapped onto the white pump tube, and the white Y-fitting was connected to the color side to see if the problem followed.

💬 “Color ink is pumping fine, but white still isn’t pumping.”
  • Color Y-fitting → white pump tube → color ink pumps normally → white pump motor is functioning correctly
  • Captop lower side normal + captop upper side (damper) normal
  • → The only remaining cause is head-to-captop position misalignment (incomplete seal)

2. Field Outcome
💬 “White is pumping now! You should have told me to try this first…”

“The position was fine before the head replacement, so I assumed it wouldn’t be the issue — but it was.” This was a case of the position shifting slightly after head replacement. Even when all other checks pass, position alignment must be verified separately.

3. How to Align the Captop and Head Position

X-Axis (Left/Right) Adjustment

  • Can be set precisely via [Origin springback(mm)] in software (labeled in mm but actually in dot units)
  • Adding or subtracting 3 moves the position approximately 1mm
  • This value is already configured at delivery — it rarely needs to be changed

Y-Axis (Front/Back) Adjustment — The Key Step

Move the entire capping station to align the captop with the print head. Loosening the two bolts beneath the waste ink tank allows the capping station to be shifted by hand.

Step-by-step procedure:

  • Trigger inkload (pumping) from the software to keep the pump motor running
  • With ink not yet reaching the waste tank, slowly shift the capping station block forward and back by hand
  • At a certain point, you will hear a tapping sound (“tok-tok-tok”), followed by ink beginning to flow
  • Hold the block firmly at that position and tighten the two bolts without letting go
⚠️ The capping station can drift left or right while tightening the bolts.
After confirming white inkload, always re-check pumping and cleaning for color and varnish as well.

If pumping (inkload) still fails after checking everything else, this procedure can resolve the issue.
