Today, I’m going to talk about why masks don’t print with a UV printer.

 

I. Problems with mask printing using a UV printer _Mask printing is not possible with a UV printer

1. Material loading issue _Mask printing is not possible with a UV printer

Materials placed on the flatbed must remain flat to be printed with a UV printer.

For this reason, the bottom of the flatbed is held in place by a vacuum or a fan.

Both methods use vacuum or air to hold the material, which weakens the holding force if the material is porous.

If the holding force is weak, the material may move during printing, or the heat from the LED may cause the material to bend and hit the print head.

Masks require a porous layer to breathe, and the vacuum or fan of a UV printer cannot hold the material.

However, there are several methods available to hold the mask flat.

I used transparent PET film to cover the entire surface, excluding the printing area, to ensure the mask adheres to the flatbed.

 

2. Uncoated mask cloth _Mask printing is not possible with a UV printer

When UV printing on regular fabric, the ink is absorbed into the material as soon as it falls, preventing proper color reproduction.

Since masks are also fabric, the ink is absorbed, preventing proper color reproduction with UV printing.

I tried printing white first and then printing color over it, but 600% white was not enough, and 1200% printing was needed to compensate for the ink absorption.

If your mask printing margins are not high, you should double-check whether your white ink consumption is adequate.

When UV printing on regular fabrics, other than masks,

you must check whether the fabric is coated.

Coated fabrics do not absorb ink, making UV printing possible.

 

3. The critical issue _Mask printing is not possible with a UV printer

They say you can’t print on a mask with UV ink.

 

II. Fabrics that are actually being printed _Mask printing is not possible with a UV printer

Those with large UV printers print on actual fabric.
They call it “cotton fabric,” and it’s primarily used for advertising.

 

I briefly heard from an acquaintance that

• depending on the type of coating applied to the cotton fabric itself,
• whether it can be UV printed on,
• the color and ink absorption also vary.
