Today, I’ll be explaining the products that can be made with a UV printer, starting with Braille printing.

While all UV printers can print Braille, not all can achieve the required stack height and convexity.

I. How to print Braille using White and Varnish simultaneously _How to print Braille with a UV printer

The Braille height should be approximately 0.5-0.7mm, and the ink height can be made with white or varnish.

The Braille shown in the photo below was created by laminating ink with white and varnish, then printing color at the very end to add color.

Laminating with only white or only varnish would have been time-consuming, so I created the ink lamination using both white and varnish.자

1. Create a File _How to print Braille with a UV printer

I used the Ai file with Braille as is.

The Braille was set to black, and the [ARTJET UV Printer] text was set to yellow.

Instead of creating the White and Varnish Spots as an Ai file, I used the “Monochrome Mode” feature, which automatically generates White and Varnish in Rip.

  • To print White or Varnish only where the Ai file contains Color, you can either create a Spot Color layer in the Ai file,
  • or simply load the Ai file into Rip Software and use the “Monochrome Mode” feature in the Spot Color Options window.
  • However, if there are areas in the image that are expressed as White, White is not a color, so using this feature will prevent the White from being printed on those areas.

2. printer program _How to print Braille with a UV printer

To create Braille from a ripped image, you need to configure a few settings in your printer program.

To print in White or Varnish at a height of 0.5 to 0.7 mm, you need to access the Spot Color Options window.

  • In your printer program, click Menu, then click Spot Color.

Activate Varnish mode or Light Oil mode at the top right corner.

  • Ink layering is created by simultaneously printing white and varnish.
  • Since varnish is used, click Varnish mode or Oil mode to activate it.
  • When this button is activated, after printing, the head carriage will move back and forth several more times,
  • additionally curing the printed varnish.

White and Varnish repeat printing settings in the large middle box

  • Each channel can be set from 100% to 800%. 100% prints the rip image as is,
  • 200% prints twice, 300% prints three times, and 800% prints eight times.
  • Because of the repeat printing, the speed decreases. For example, if you set it to 800%, the same section will be repeated eight times, increasing the printing time eightfold.
  • Change the White channel from 100% to 400% in steps 7 through 12.
  • Change the Varnish channel from 100% to 400% in steps 13 through 18.

Bottom: White and Varnish Density Settings

  • This settings window allows you to set the White Density and Varnish Density when printing the Rip image as is.
  • Since we need to create a laminate, set the Max value in both settings windows to 100%.

Once these settings are complete, proceed with printing.

II. Creating Braille with White or Varnish Only _How to print Braille with a UV printer

1. Braille printing in White only _How to print Braille with a UV printer

In the ARTJET software, go to Menu => Spot color options, select “Print only White,” and

set White channels 7-12 to 800%, as shown below.

Set the white density at the bottom to 100%.

2. Braille printing with Varnish only _How to print Braille with a UV printer

There’s no option in the ARTJET software to print only the Varnish.

You can create an AI file with only the Varnish.

Alternatively, lock the color and white settings at the bottom by selecting “close” and then set it to print only the Varnish.

Then, select Varnish (or Light of mode) as shown below.

Set Varnish channels 13-18 to 800%,

Set the varnish density at the bottom to 100%.

III. Description of options _How to print Braille with a UV printer

1. Light of mode (with varnish) meaning _How to print Braille with a UV printer

One thing to emphasize is that this option isn’t related to print data.

Regarding the lamp options, the ARTJET’s varnish head is installed one block forward of the color head, as shown below,

and the varnish lamp is also positioned slightly further forward than the varnish head.

If the lamp passes immediately after the varnish is printed on the material, the result would be a matte varnish.

However, this forward positioning of the lamp allows the varnish inks time to diffuse, creating a glossy effect.

Will the nozzle get clogged when printing on reflective materials?

However, if all operations are terminated when printing is complete,

  • i.e., if printing is completed immediately after Varnish printing, the Varnish will remain at the front, preventing the varnish from curing at the end.
  • While printing will not occur, the head carriage will have to move back and forth several more times to cure the varnish at the end.
  • If this option is checked, the head carriage will continue to move back and forth several more times after printing is complete,
  • so this checkbox must be selected when printing Varnish.

2. What does the 100% ~800% setting window mean? _How to print Braille with a UV printer

This option doesn’t increase the amount sprayed at once.

It increases the number of passes, or the number of times the print head carriage makes a pass, thereby increasing the density.

  • If you select the 100% option, the pass will be printed as before.
  • If you select 200%, the pass will be 2, meaning the print head carriage will pass through the same section twice before moving on to the next pass.
  • This means that since the same section is printed twice, the density will double, but because the print head carriage has to make two passes, the print time will double.
  • At 800%, the density will increase by eight passes, but the print time will increase eightfold.

3. Meaning of the 0~100% setting window at the very bottom _How to print Braille with a UV printer

This option controls the amount fired per pass of the head carriage.

Since the number of passes is not increased, the printing speed remains the same.

If the amount of white or varnish printed at once is too high, this window allows you to set a specific density, such as 50%.

Since the ink deposition thickness is important for Braille printing, it should be set to 100%, the maximum amount.

IV. Braille printing density and precautions _How to print Braille with a UV printer

1. Calculating concentration values _How to print Braille with a UV printer

How to print Braille with a UV printer
How to print Braille with a UV printer

Let’s use Varnish Braille as an example.

The XP600 (FA1080-a1) print head has 6 channels, V V V V V V, and all six printheads use varnish.
Options range from 0 to 100%, with 100% varnish density fired at once.
Options range from 100 to 800%, with 800%, meaning 8 repetitions of the same section.

6 channels x 100% x 800% = 6 channels x 100% density x 8 round trips = 4,800% varnish density.

Compared to other printers with 1 or 2 varnish channels, the 6-channel design allows for three times faster Braille height increase.

White is also the same.

2. Caution _How to print Braille with a UV printer

The information described above may vary depending on the following:

  • When printing under the above conditions, the stacking height may vary depending on printer variations. If the stacking height is insufficient, multiple prints may be required.
  • The accumulated ink thickness may vary depending on bidirectional conditions, platen height, ambient temperature, etc.
  • As the LED lamp light accumulates and heats the material, LED lamp power adjustments may be required for materials sensitive to heat. In some cases, printing may not be possible.
  • Since ink accumulates and increases in height, it is recommended to increase the initial print height by 0.2-0.3 mm from the default height. However, the increased print height may cause ink to scatter around the print.
  • For ARTJET, multiple files are not required to create a raised impression.
  • With only one file, the raised appearance is achieved due to ink cohesion.
  • If this is not possible due to variations in the material, multiple AI files must be used to create a raised impression.

V. UV printer Braille printing _How to print Braille with a UV printer

According to a 2023 Business Research Insights report, the market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7.7% until 2031.

The primary applications are books and maps, and the materials used are divided into paper, plastic film substrates, rigid plastics, and others.

The market we are focusing on is the public sector, bank, and general corporate signage market.

The existing method of printing Braille by applying force to simple text or logos on metal substrates

  • was primarily focused on conveying information,
  • and required a minimum order quantity to be secured.

However, with the introduction of UV printers for Braille, images can be added, enabling small-scale orders.

We anticipate that UV printers will replace existing methods in the Braille market in the future.

VI. This is how ARTJET supports our customers.

One thing I feel while selling and maintaining ARTJET UV Printers for 5 years is that the next most important thing after product stability is Troubleshooting DATA.

All products have problems, whether they are actual equipment problems or consumer errors, and product stability is how easily and quickly you solve those problems.

We are organizing all the troubleshooting DATA as follows.
