Now, I’m explaining about the products that can be made with a UV Printer.

1. How to print in Braille

2. “When printing on the front and then flipping the material over to print a different image on the back, can the front and back positions be aligned exactly?”

Today, I will explain how to express a gradient with White and, furthermore, how to print it with a three-dimensional effect as shown in the photo below.

I. Create a file _Expressing gradients and three-dimensionality with white

1. Creating a White Texture _Expressing gradients and three-dimensionality with white

The reason the photo above feels three-dimensional is because the height is expressed through actual white printing.

Viewing the actual printed image, rather than a photograph, gives a greater sense of depth, and you can even feel the height when touching it.

Those who have used UV printers for a long time or who work in equipment sales,

know that “white can only be used as a spot color, not as a gradient like 0-100%.”

However, there is a solution.

While this isn’t possible with an AI file, Photoshop allows you to express gradients and textures with white.

After creating an alpha channel, go to [Image => Adjustments => Levels] and adjust the alpha channel’s levels. Then, specify a spot color. This will cause the white to print according to that level, rather than being flat.

II. Setting printer program options _Expressing gradients and three-dimensionality with white

After creating an image in Photoshop, the printing process is similar to the Braille printing method described previously.

The desired height is adjusted from 100% to 800%, then white is printed, with the color finally representing the image.

100% to 800% refers to the white layer.

  • 100% refers to the same area, which is printed once, similar to a standard image.
  • 200% refers to the same area twice, and 800% refers to the same area eight times.
  • The White density setting at the bottom must be set to 100% to maximize the amount of white printed at once.

III. Would it be practical? _Expressing gradients and three-dimensionality with white

1. Braille _Expressing gradients and three-dimensionality with white

When I first showed Braille applications using a UV printer, almost everyone said,

“It would take too long to increase the thickness like this… It wouldn’t be useful!”

95% of the customers I met said the same thing, while the remaining 5% were curious.

Two companies using ARTJET specifically order white and varnish, and both create high-value images by printing images that include Braille.

2. A representative who developed various applications _Expressing gradients and three-dimensionality with white

Sometimes, when I visit the CEO’s office, he shows me products I hadn’t seen before. They seem good, but they haven’t been very popular.

When I visit again for other reasons, I see new items. With all that hard work, has he gotten tired?

“Do you have any used UV DTF roll coaters for sale?”
“The bonding machine is barely used.”

He hasn’t had much work for a year, but two months ago, he signed a two-year contract with a major company, and now he’s working on weekends. When I visited last week, the CEO said,

“Team Leader, I saw several products from your company and was impressed. All of the products you deliver are basically bonded. I didn’t think I’d need a bonder, but…”

Recently, someone was looking to purchase a UV DTF roll coater, and I remembered the former CEO asking, “Do you have any used ones for sale?” So I called and asked,

“We’ve applied it to a mug and have a sample in our warehouse. I think we’ll find some use for it in the future.”

We’re developing a variety of items, and I think the white three-dimensional effect is a useful feature.

3. Texture expression that is difficult to achieve with Japanese equipment _Expressing gradients and three-dimensionality with white

Rather than thinking, “Japanese equipment is expensive but good,” it’s important to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each device.

  • UV printers using expensive print heads use up to two white print heads for each color print head, or 200% of the color.
  • To express color in CMYK on transparent or colored materials, white is printed on the background. However, 200% white sometimes lacks sufficient white density,
  • and is not sufficient to cover the background color of black materials.

Similarly, to express Braille or texture using 200% white, printing requires three times more printing than with an ARTJET, which uses 600% white.

For example, in Braille,

  • ARTJET requires 8 prints at 600% (4,800%) to even approach the height of the Braille standard.
  • So, if Japanese equipment is at 200%, to achieve 4,800%, 4,800 ÷ 200 = 24 prints would be required.

Even to express the texture of an elephant image, Japanese equipment takes significantly more time, leading to a higher price tag.
ARTJET, however, doesn’t take as long as Japanese equipment, allowing for a more reasonable price.

While older Japanese equipment certainly understands how to generate images, it seems that for these economic reasons, Braille and 3D images haven’t been widely adopted.

4. As one product line _Expressing gradients and three-dimensionality with white

When I meet with friends who run print shops using UV printers,

sometimes they ask, “I don’t care about the price, but can you achieve this effect?”

If we create a variety of applications using the texture expressions I’ve just described,

  • like the CEO who signed a two-year contract, our diverse product lineup can help secure contracts.
  • We can also provide immediate solutions to artists who want something unique.
  • In particular, since Japanese equipment, which has been in the market for a long time, is not available due to time and cost constraints,

I believe this will become a specialized item.

IV. This is how ARTJET supports our customers.

One thing I feel while selling and maintaining ARTJET UV Printers for 5 years is that the next most important thing after product stability is Troubleshooting DATA.

All products have problems, whether they are actual equipment problems or consumer errors, and product stability is how easily and quickly you solve those problems.

We are organizing all the troubleshooting DATA as follows.
