Is Printing with a Rotary Bottle Jig Profitable? — Making Products with a UV Printer (Part 12)

✅ Who Should Read This
  • Those planning to attempt UV printing using a rotary bottle jig
  • Those curious about the differences between bottle printing methods (Y-axis linked, rubber friction, dedicated equipment)
  • Those who want to understand why printing speed drops to 1/4 when using a bottle jig
  • Those concerned about ink adhesion and profitability when printing on metal or glass tumblers
  • Those wondering if it’s possible to print on conical bottles without image distortion

⚠️ Precautions
  • Only 1/4 of the print head is usable when using a bottle jig, reducing speed to 1/4 compared to flatbed printing. This must be reflected in your pricing.
  • High-end materials like metal and glass have unstable adhesion. Verify the appropriate primer and select items that do not require high-temperature washing.
  • Plastic bottles with good adhesion are low-cost items, making it difficult to set high profit margins.
  • Conical bottles suffer from image distortion due to diameter variations. Minimize this by reducing image width or printing in segments.

🧭 Key Summary (Field Insight)
  • Bottle jigs use only 1/4 of the head due to stand-off issues on curved surfaces → 75% reduction in productivity.
  • Unstable adhesion on premium materials (Metal, Glass) → Difficult to maintain as high-profit items.
  • Low-cost plastic bottles yield low margins despite good adhesion → Hard to secure profitability either way.
  • Conical bottles cause distortion as RIP software cannot compensate for circumference differences — address by narrowing the image or split-printing.
  • If you must print bottles: Adjust unit price for low productivity + verify primer + choose non-boilable items + acknowledge conical limitations.

Today, we discuss the usage and profitability of rotary bottle printing jigs.

I. 5 Methods of Rotary Bottle Printing – Is Printing with a Rotary Bottle Jig Profitable

1. Y-Axis Linked Motion Jig

  • Watch the YouTube link below for a detailed guide from installation to printing.
  • Ideal for beginners to understand how bottle jigs operate.
  • Power and signals are connected to the Y-axis motion to rotate the jig during printing.
  • A sturdy and precise method.
  • While compatible with our UV Printers, we generally do not recommend this to most buyers.
  • “Why do we not recommend it?” We will explain further below.

2. Rubber Friction on Flatbed

  • Uses rubber rollers that move via friction as the Y-axis bed travels.
  • Less stable than direct motion linking but functional.
  • See the video below for details.
  • Affordable, but stability needs frequent checking as it relies on friction rather than a motor.

3. Dedicated Bottle Printers

  • Equipment from specialized manufacturers like InkCups (USA).
  • Exclusively for bottles; can handle conical shapes and solve image distortion.
  • Priced between $75,000 and $115,000 (approx. 100M-150M KRW).
  • Professional bottle printing shops typically use this grade of machinery.

4. Industrial Mass-Production Printers

5. Discontinued Diagonal Printing Projects

  • A method using diagonal printing for speed, but highly vulnerable to nozzle dropouts.
  • A project I personally developed in a previous role.
  • You can see the mechanism on YouTube.

II. Why We Don’t Recommend the Bottle Jig Method – Is Printing with a Rotary Bottle Jig Profitable

1. Drastic Reduction in Printing Speed

    • In UV printing, the “stand-off” (gap between the head and material) is critical.
    • If the head is too high, ink misting occurs and image quality drops.
    • Refer to this post for more on stand-off issues:
    • Challenges in iPhone 14 Printing

1_1. Problems with using the full head width for bottles

  • The highest point of a bottle may have a 1.2mm stand-off, but since bottles are curved, the edges will have a much larger gap.
  • An XP600 nozzle plate is about 2.56cm wide. If we maintain a 1.2mm gap at the top, only about 0.64cm of that width stays within the acceptable range.
  • This means for 1.92cm of the head width, the stand-off is too high, leading to blurry results.

1_2. Visualize the Quality Difference

  • The image below shows the quality difference when using 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 of the print head at the same height.
  • When using a Bottle Jig, you cannot use the full head like you do with flatbed items. You are limited to 1/4.
  • Consequently, printing speed drops by 75%.

2. Adhesion and Profit Margins

  • Small UV printers are mostly used for goods and signage.
  • Signage usually stays untouched on a wall, so standard primer on metal or glass works fine.
  • However, metal tumblers are handled constantly and washed frequently. They require much higher adhesion than signage.
  • Adhesion on premium metal and glass items is often a point of failure for small UV units.
  • High-end items should command higher prices, but the risk of peeling makes them difficult to sell confidently.
  • Conversely, plastic bottles have great adhesion but their low base cost prevents you from charging a high premium.
  • In short: Premium items carry too much adhesion risk, and easy plastic items yield no profit. Neither path is highly lucrative.

3. Why Conical Bottle Printing is Difficult

  • Standard RIP software creates files for flat surfaces. It doesn’t calculate circumference differences between the wide and narrow parts of a cone.
  • The distance traveled per rotation varies along the length of a conical glass.
  • Since the source image is a rectangle but the material is a cone, you get distortion regardless of which diameter you calibrate to.
  • Printing is only viable if the image width is very narrow, minimizing the distortion.
  • In the example below, the separate top and bottom prints show no distortion because they were processed as independent, narrow segments.

4. If You Absolutely Must Print on Bottles

  • Dedicated equipment is the correct solution, but the high entry cost is a barrier.
  • If using a Bottle Jig is your only option, keep these points in mind:
  • Price your services reflecting the 75% drop in productivity.
  • Verify specific primers for metal/glass and perform adhesion tests.
  • Only accept items that do not require high-temperature dishwashing.
  • Be transparent about the graphical limitations of conical bottles.

III. ARTJET UV Printer

After 5 years of selling and maintaining ARTJET UV printers, we’ve learned one vital lesson.
Beyond product stability, the most important factor is accumulated troubleshooting data.
Every machine can face issues depending on the environment and user skill. In production, the key isn’t a “perfect” machine, but:
How fast and how accurately you can identify and solve the problem when it occurs.
ARTJET continuously collects field data to support faster and more precise troubleshooting for our clients.
