We’ve compiled a list of products that can be made with a UV printer.
Today, I’m going to talk about how to check the print quality of a UV printer.
I. Misconceptions about print resolution _Meaning of small text by UV printer
1. Incorrect knowledge _Meaning of small text by UV printer
Having worked for over 15 years at a printer manufacturer, manufacturing printers with various print heads, I’ve come to understand the print resolutions each head can achieve.
However, even end users and printer dealers often have misconceptions about print resolution.
The first question most people ask is,
“For the same head, other vendors claim up to 1440×1440 dpi, but why does the ARTJET only offer 720×1080 dpi?”
“The ink droplet has a dot size of 4.5pl, and with that volume, 720×1080 dpi is the optimal resolution, and this resolution offers the best quality.”
With a fixed head specification,
- just adding more ink drops (although increasing the physical resolution would increase the ink droplet count) won’t improve print quality.
- The resolution that’s precisely suited to that head is the optimal print quality that head can achieve.
2. What is the best resolution that 2pl can achieve? _Meaning of small text by UV printer
I told you that the highest resolution achievable with 4.5pl is 720 x 1080 dpi.
How small do ink droplets have to be to achieve the 1440 x 1440 dpi that other vendors claim?
Let me explain using equipment from Italy’s Durst.
- The inkjet label printer prints in a single pass and costs approximately 1.4 billion won.
- The print head is also surprisingly expensive.
- The ink jet capacity from the print head is 2 pico liters, and the print quality is as follows:

Regarding the text print quality described above,
- If you look at the 2-font text, the ink dots are completely invisible.
- Even the 1-font text is displayed.
- If you print the text from 1 to 4 fonts in actual size with your current printer, you’ll understand what the 2-font text above means.
Printing resolution:
- The smaller the ink droplet capacity,
- the smaller the diameter of the ink droplet formed when it falls on the material, and this increases the actual resolution.
- Only this properly implemented resolution can improve print quality.
Any company that claims 1440 x 1440 dpi without meeting the print head specifications is clearly ignorant of the concept of inkjet resolution.

3. The first meaning of the small print _Meaning of small text by UV printer
The photo below was printed at the actual font size and was taken with a 10x magnification. Text from 6 to 2 fonts is clearly displayed.
However, 1 font text is not clearly displayed.
Explaining ink droplet size, or pico liters:
- The 2 pico liter head used by Durst, shown in the photo above, corresponds to a 1 font print and has a resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi.
- The 4.5 pico liter head corresponds to a 2 font print in the photo below and has a resolution of 720 x 1080 dpi.
- At 7 pico liters, 2 fonts are also displayed, but not clearly. 3 fonts are fine.
The small text on a UV printer gives you a rough idea of the printer’s pico liter capacity and maximum resolution.

II. Offset precision _Meaning of small text by UV printer
1. Printer manufacturer technology _Meaning of small text by UV printer
As explained above, ink dot size is a crucial factor in determining resolution.
However, no matter how good the ink dots are, if the C, M, Y, K, Lc, and Lm are not jetted in the correct locations, clear two-font text, as shown in the photo above, cannot be achieved.
The text in the photo above is a two-font text created by mixing CMYK, lc, and lm.
The small text on a UV printer serves as a measure of whether the six color channel offsets (C, M, Y, K, Lc, and Lm) are accurately aligned.
This refers to the manufacturing quality of the printer itself, not the head quality.
No matter how good the head is, if the printer is not properly manufactured, it will not be able to achieve the highest print quality.
2. The color may be strange _Meaning of small text by UV printer
If the font text isn’t clear,
- As explained above, this means the CMYK Lc Lm offset isn’t properly matched.
- This reduces the clarity of small text,
- but the biggest problem is that colors aren’t properly rendered, and the entire image may shift to a specific color tone.
- If a single color, such as magenta or cyan, shifts slightly to the left or right, or up or down,
- the entire image color shifts to that slightly shifted color tone.
The small text on a UV printer can also serve as a barometer of whether colors are being rendered properly.
3. Same head, different manufacturer _Meaning of small text by UV printer
Even when using the same print head, some manufacturers produce excellent print quality, while others don’t.
The printer manufacturer’s technical prowess lies in whether or not it can properly achieve the highest resolution of the print head it uses.
To achieve the highest resolution possible, all areas—mechanics, electronics, software, and ink—must be perfectly aligned.
Epson-based print heads, in particular, have an essential additional offset function. If you’re currently using a third-party UV printer,
- you’ll likely adjust the color offset by changing the CMYK Lc Lm left and right values.
- Some equipment adjusts the offset for each white channel, but others use a single value for all six white channels.
- Varnish is also the same as white.
I think you understand this, but there needs to be an offset in the vertical direction.
- Do the starting points of the nozzles for each channel match? They don’t.
- An offset function that adjusts for this difference is necessary to properly align the CMYK Lc Lm values horizontally and vertically.
- Especially, Epson heads, which jet multiple colors through a single head, require this feature to properly produce small fonts and colors.
A detailed explanation of the up and down offset functions can be found here.
For this reason, UV printer promotional materials often feature photos and videos that emphasize small print.
- How small is a pico liter?
- How well is the offset adjusted?

III. This is how ARTJET supports our customers.
One thing I feel while selling and maintaining ARTJET UV Printers for 5 years is that the next most important thing after product stability is Troubleshooting DATA.
All products have problems, whether they are actual equipment problems or consumer errors, and product stability is how easily and quickly you solve those problems.
We are organizing all the troubleshooting DATA as follows.
