Today I will explain the difference between screen printing and digital printing and share with you some photos of individual name and group name UV printing on hand sanitizers.
I. Screen Printing and Digital Printing
1. Screen printing method
1 degree, 2 degrees, the expression “degree” is correct, but here it is expressed as “plate” for convenience.
Let me give you some examples.
1 color printing
You need to print the red letters “No Trespassing” on white background acrylic.
It should be called “sha”, but let’s just call it “plate”.
Prepare a plate. The plate is covered with an airtight cloth.
On the cloth, use a needle to make small, tight holes in line with the letters “No Trespassing.” When you pour water, the water will only leak out from the “No Trespassing” holes.
Place the plate on the acrylic where you want to print, and pour sticky red ink from one starting point.
Then, with something like a spatula, push it all the way from the starting point where the sticky red ink is to the other end.
Then, when you remove the plate from the acrylic, only the letters “No Trespassing” will remain on the acrylic.
Printing like this is called screen printing.
Two color printing
“No Trespassing” We received another request to add the text “Keep” in black underneath the red.
Since the red one has already been made, you can continue to use the plate you used before.
However, you need to make a new black plate. In this way, you make the black plate in the same way as the red one.
The words “Keep” must be printed exactly 5cm below the red “No Trespassing” letters and 10cm to the right.
To align the letters exactly,
I marked a reference point on the acrylic to be printed,
and made a reference point on the red plate,
and made a reference point on the black plate.
By printing based on the reference point, the words “Keep”were printed exactly 5cm below and 10cm to the right of the words “No Trespassing”
16teen color print
A customer comes with a travel photo and asks, “I’ll give you 500,000 won, so print 10 copies of the photo.”
The printing shop owner is confused. ‘How should I print the photo?’
The ambitious printing shop owner decides to give it a try. He prepares 16 plates and makes all the plates needed to express colors.
He pours ink one by one on the first plate, second plate, third plate, fourth plate,,,,, up to the 16th plate according to the reference point and pushes it with a spatula to finish printing.
‘Well, this should be enough.’ He is somewhat satisfied.
And, the second printing begins. Again, the first plate, the second plate, the third plate, the fourth plate,,,,, up to the 16th plate, ink is poured one by one to the reference point and pushed with a spatula to complete.
However, there is a color difference from the first printing.
When I looked closely at what was wrong, I found that the 11th plate out of the 16 plates was printed 0.5 mm to the right.
‘I thought I aligned it very well, but did the acrylic get pushed? Did I not align the plate properly with the pin? ‘
After that, the printing shop owner decided not to print photos.
2. Screen Printing Pros and Cons
Pros
The price is low if the quantity is large for the same design.
Specific colors that cannot be made digitally can be matched through color mixing.
Coca-Cola RED or a specific logo color of the company
Cons
The initial investment cost is high even for small orders to make a screen plate and match colors, so money must be invested in sample printing.
If there are wrong numbers or letters in the image, such as an address, the cost increases because the screen plate must be made each time.
If only a few small quantities are needed for defect repair, the cost is not cheap because the color mixing that was done at that time must be matched again.
The more complex the image, the more difficult it is to match colors, and even if the screen plate is slightly off, the same color will not come out.
Mostly located in industrial complexes due to environmental issues and smell.
Generally, a lot of waste ink is generated and the ink smells bad.
3. Digital printing method

If you watch the YouTube video, the colors of the first plate, second plate, third plate, fourth plate, etc. are automatically classified into digital DATA through a software program called Rip.
The classified DATA is sent to the print head, and the print head receives the classified data as an electrical signal and jet ink as instructed.
When all the ink drops are fired as instructed, the image above is completed.
4. Digital Printing Pros and Cons
Advantages
Since there is no need to make a screen plate, sampling is free, and printing is possible immediately after receiving an order.
Since there is no need to make a screen plate for small quantities, it is not expensive.
Since the address is different for each image, there is no need to make a separate screen plate, and since you only need to change the design file, the cost does not increase significantly.
Since small quantities are possible, you can make defect repair prints on the spot.
An environment that can be operated in a factory-type apartment or a general office.
Relatively less waste ink because it is printed digitally.
The smell problem during the work is not as severe as screen printing.
Disadvantages
Pre-processing or post-processing is required to strengthen the adhesion of certain materials, such as glass and iron plates.
Even if the order quantity is large, the cost does not decrease much.
5. The Biggest Reason to Go Digital from Screen
If you go to a label printing or screen printing place, there are many old people.
Color matching is not easy, and the smell of ink and noisy equipment are running here and there, so young people do not work there for long.
On the other hand, digital printing has a cleaner work environment compared to existing printing methods,
and color matching does not require special skills because it modifies the Ai file instead of ink mixing that requires a sense.
Because of this problem of supply and demand for manpower, printing shop owners have no choice but to go digital.
In particular, printing shops with large scale in the label market have almost all changed to digital to the point where they own UV digital printing equipment.
