What is ICC profile today? After a brief explanation, I will explain how to make a restaurant menu sign.
I. What is the ICC profile
1. The difference between having an ICC profile and not!!
This happened two years ago when I was installing the ARTJET UV Printer at a customer site.
After the ARTJET SW training, I had to do Sai Rip training, but I found out that I didn’t bring the ICC profile file. It was also Saturday so there was no one in the office.
“CEO, please proceed with the Rip training as is and apply it later when I give you the ICC profile.”
I printed the CEO’s test image and provided training, but I was still bothered by the test image where the colors did not match.
In the end, I contacted someone who lived near the office and asked him to send me ICC profile by email.
After applying the ICC profile, the CEO looked at the printed image and said,
“Actually, I didn’t tell you before applying the ICC profile, but it was a bit like that. After applying it, the color is good, and I really like it.”
2. What is ICC and what is profile?
International Color Consortium profile. Overview of the International Color Cooperation Group. To put it briefly, the definition or range of colors determined by the Color Association.
It’s a little long, but I’ll break it down easily.
Let’s say there are three places of printing shop.
A customer sends the order “Please print the color red” to all printing shop A, B, and C.
When customer received the goods from three places, the color red was slightly different at all A, B, and C printing shops.
Printers A, B, and C all claim that the red color they created is accurate.
After fighting with each other like this, the customer ultimately turns to print shop D rather than A, B, or C and places an order there.
Printers A, B, and C only loose their job, and only Printer D is a big hit.
The owners of a print shop whose business went bankrupt meet by chance at a bar.
After having a drink or two together, the feelings we had fighting faded away and we started looking for a way to save the failing printing company again.
The next day, the three presidents printed red, and after a long agreement, “Let’s match the red color to the color printed by Printer B.”
The three presidents met the next day and said, “Let’s match the blue color to the color printed by Printer A.”
And the next day, they continue to agree on the color, and each time they agree, they keep the printed color at all of A.B.C. Printing and always match the color to that color.
After a year, countless color charts were owned by all A, B, and C printing companies.
The customer places an order after looking at the color chart, and since the color comes out exactly as ordered, printing companies A, B, and C are all huge hits.
Now, Printing House D is going out of business because it cannot match the colors of Printing Shops A, B, and C, which have become the standard.
In this way, printing companies A, B, and C established an association under the name of the ICC International Color Consortium Group and set color standards.
3. When the failed D Printing Company discovered Inkjet,
The owner of D Printing Company, who was drinking every day and thinking about the end of his life, happened to come across Inkjet.
‘If only color ink could be added to an inkjet that prints text to match the standard colors set by A.B.C printing companies.’
We can print even single sheets rather than large quantities.
There is no need to experiment with mixing colors to match them.
That’s how you meet software developers.
* Obtain the paper used at A, B, and C printing shops,
* We also secretly purchase color charts determined by A, B, and C printing companies.
Let’s start with red again.
Among the four colors C, M, Y, and K, when matching red on the color chart, C, M, Y, and K are mixed.
The SW developer inputs a red value into the SW according to that value,
Now adjust the blue color again and redefine the C, M, Y, and K ratios.
The SW developer again inputs the blue value into the SW according to that value,
As he continued doing this, several patterns and logic appeared, and now he was able to match similar colors just by entering the patterns.
In this way, the logic for creating an ICC profile in Inkjet is born.
4. To briefly explain the process of creating an ICC Profile,
As explained above, creating an ICC profile means using Inkjet to implement colors similar to the standard colors set by ICC.
The inkjet ICC profile creation process is largely divided into three tasks.
* Set the highest limit for each ink C, M, Y, K.
Print a gradation from 0 to 100% for each color, and set the limit of the ink where there is no further color change.
Taking black ink as an example, it naturally becomes darker from 0% to 80%, but beyond 80%, the black color no longer changes.
Then, set the maximum limit of black color to 80% and set it so that black color does not drop beyond that point.
C, M, and K do the same.
* Set the maximum limit for representative mixed colors
Now print by mixing representative colors such as C 100% and Y 100%, and set the limit where the color no longer changes.
* Once the limit is set like this, apply the logic created by the SW developer to Inkjet
From here, the logic created by the software developer is applied.
After printing the color chart and reading it with a device that reads the color chart,
A SW file is created that matches the color based on the color standard created by the ICC(International Color Consortium)
If you apply the SW file to the printer you are currently using, the color will be implemented similar to the color specified by ICC.
We call this file an ICC profile.
5. Factors affecting ICC Profile
If the print resolution changes, the ICC profile must be recreated to match the changed resolution.
When the ink is changed, the color value is different from the existing ink, so an ICC profile must be created again to match the changed ink.
Strictly speaking, even if the printed material changes, the ICC profile must be recreated. Not all white paper is the same white. Because it has a slightly yellow or blue tint. However, in the case of UV printers, this level is ignored. Because it is not possible to do everything every time the material changes,,
II. Create a restaurant sign
1. Simple way
Although it looks luxurious, the process of making it is really simple.

2. Print with orange and purple colors
The above print uses C M Y K Orange, Violet, instead of C M Y K Lc Lm.
If you apply Orange and Violet instead of Lc and Lm, that is, light Cyan and light Magenta, the color expression is much stronger and better.
However, since Orange and Violet inks are not used for general purposes like Lc Lm,
* Among ink manufacturers, there are very few companies that produce it.
* Even if it is occasionally produced, the consumption is small because it is not the main ink like C, M, Y, and K.
* RIP Software companies may or may not be able to create an ICC Profile when including Orange and Violet ink.
Because of this supply problem, Orange and Violet ink were discontinued after only a short test.
